Description	:	Ollie L. Hitchens, Jr., age 72, of Dagsboro, DE formerly of Bishopville, MD passed on Monday, January 6, 2020. He was born in Bishopville, MD on August 15, 1947 son of the late Ollie L. Hitchens, Sr. and the late Laura E. (Hudson) Hitchens. Hitchens, Jr., age 72, of Dagsboro, DE formerly of Bishopville, MD passed on Monday, January 6, 2020. He was born in Bishopville, MD on August 15, 1947 son of the late Ollie L. Hitchens, Sr. and the late Laura E. (Hudson) Hitchens. Ollie graduated from Stephen Decatur High School in Berlin, MD and then proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. Ollie retired as a Staff Sergeant in the United States Army in 1984 after 20 years of service. While he was enlisted with the Army, he served in the military police where he was a guard during Lyndon B. Johnson’s funeral. Ollie also had the privilege in escorting several of his lost comrades back to the United States after giving their life for our country. After retiring from the Army, Ollie worked as a constable for Sussex County and also for Rice Pest Control and Western Pest Control in Salisbury before completely retiring. Ollie was a member of the American Legion Post #24 in Dagsboro, DE and a frequent member of the coffee group at the Selbyville and Millsboro McDonald’s, where he would get caught up on all the local news. His true love was for his family. He was devoted to his mom and proud of all of his children’s accomplishments. Ollie will be missed by his grandchildren as he would faithfully eat lunch with them a couple days out of the week at the Southern Delaware School of the Arts in Selbyville, DE. His fun-loving and joking spirit will be missed by all that knew him. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Donald Hitchens and Boogie Hitchens and a sister, Dorothy Warren. He is survived by his three children, Christopher Hitchens and his wife, Sylwia, Ollie L. Hitchens, III and Laura Hitchens and her companion, Kyle Hudson; the mother of his children, Dorothy Hitchens and 10 grandchildren, Katelyn, Morgan, Ethan, Konnor, Olivia, Macie, Kamryn, Mason, Cohen and Dylan. He is also survived by his six brothers, Oliver Hitchens, Cashar Hitchens, Wilmer Leroy Hitchens, Billy Hitchens, Jim Hitchens and Richard Hitchens; a sister, Marie Savage and numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. A funeral service will be held at 1 PM on Saturday, January 11, 2020 at the Ocean View Chapel of Melson Funeral Services, 38040 Muddy Neck Rd., Ocean View, DE 19970, where friends and family may call after 11 AM. Interment with military honors will follow at Bishopville Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions in Ollie’s name to the Ronald McDonald House of Delaware, 1901 Rockland Rd., Wilmington, DE 19803.
