Moye of Lake Murray, retired newspaper executive, past president of the South Carolina Press Association and author, left his family to be with his Lord and Master on Monday, September 4, 2017. A past president of the South Carolina Press Association (1992) Moye had been associated with the newspaper industry of South Carolina for more than half a century. He began his career in journalism at the Anderson, S.C., Independent-Daily Mail in 1952 while a junior at Boys High School of Anderson. He wrote sports for the Independent for three years, and at the age of 19 became sports editor of the afternoon newspaper, The Daily Mail. In 1957 Moye joined the staff of The Newberry Observer in Newberry, S.C., and retired in 1996. Moye had served as editor since 1960. When The Observer was purchased in 1979 by the former State Record Co., Moye remained editor and also became operational officer and vice president of Newberry Publishing. After retiring in 1996, Moye wrote part-time for The Lake Murray News, specializing in coverage of Lake Murray people and events, until retiring from this in 2007. He also obtained his real estate license and was associated with Wilder Realty. Moye was active in numerous civic and community affairs during his many years in Newberry, and served on several boards, including Lake Murray Recreation and tourism. He was a delegation appointee on the Central Midlands Regional Planning Council, a former Rotarian, served several terms as Chairman of the Newberry District Boy Scouts of America, and was PIO for several years for the Newberry County Disaster Preparedness Unit. He was awarded the District Scouter of the Year in 1971. He had a special interest in Christian music, and sang in choral groups at Aveleigh Presbyterian Church of Newberry and Macedonia Lutheran Church of Prosperity. He also sang in several male gospel quartets, and was tenor soloist at Aveleigh for many years. He also enjoyed woodworking, fishing and deer hunting. He published a book about his 40-years of deer hunting, and also wrote an Ebook on his woodworking hobby and a murder mystery on Lake Murray, North to Prosperity.A native of Anderson, Moye was the son of the late Lecia Stevens Moye and Frank Moye of Anderson. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Mrs. Alicia Bonds Moye of the home; two sons, Michael Thomas (Shawnna Niles) Moye of North Charleston and Timothy Bonds (Valerie) Moye of Balsam Grove, N.C.; and two grandsons, Niles Oliver Moye and Maddox Carroll Moye of North Charleston who called him “O”. Funeral Services: 11:00 a.m., at Chapin United Methodist Church, with services to be conducted by the Rev. Jody Flowers and the Rev. Randy Derrick. Burial will follow at the Provident Presbyterian Church in Lowndesville, SC at 3:00 pm. Pallbearers: Fritz Hall, Larry Killian, Ed Gohn, Ray Hovis, Bill Rogers,Tuggy Veronee and Andrew Shealy.
