Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. today at Reiff Funeral Home, Dyersville, where there will be a wake service at 4 p.m., a Knights of Columbus rosary at 4:30 p.m., and a Dyersville American Legion and New Vienna VFW service at 7 p.m. Mr. Koelker worked at the former Dubuque Packing Co. for 25 years. He also was the baseball groundskeeper at the Dyersville Commercial Club Park for more than 20 years. He was born on Feb. 12, 1916, in Petersburg, son of Louis and Agnes (Klosterman) Koelker. He married Pearl C. Bagge on Aug. 2, 1948, at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Dyersville. He received his education in the Petersburg schools and graduated from the former St. Joseph's High School, Farley. He was a World War II Army veteran, having served in the 34th Red Bull Division, and served on the front lines for 600 days. The Red Bull Division defended the most hills in World War II, invading Tunisia and Italy. Omer was wounded in combat and is a recipient of the Purple Heart. He was a member of St. Francis Xavier Basilica, where he served as an usher for more than 30 years. He also was a member of the Dyersville Knights of Columbus Council 1734, Dyersville American Legion Post 137, and the New Vienna Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7736. Surviving are his wife, Pearl Koelker, of Dyersville; three sons, Lee (Rosie) Koelker and Kris (Patty) Koelker, both of Cedar Rapids, and Mike (Leanne) Koelker, of Burlington; six grandchildren, Jason, Stephanie, Kullen, Gabrielle, Kelsey and Lauren; and two sisters, Virgene (Roy) Meyer, of Dyersville, and Bernice (Joe) McDonald, of Dubuque. He was preceded in death by his parents; one grandson, Kreyton Koelker, on Jan 24, 1995; two brothers, Leander and Donald Koelker; and a sister, Corine Rubbner. An Omer J. Koelker Memorial Fund has been established for St. Francis Xavier Basilica.
