Description	:	Opal Ernestine Marshall was born on July 30, 1920, in Sullivan Co. Indiana, the 8th child of LeRoy Oliver Marshall and Rachael Ann Marshall (born Keene). Opal had 6 sisters: Edith Robertine, Eva Gertrude, Esta Louise, Hazel Ann, Georgia Maxine, Laura Pauline, and 2 brothers: Eugene Singleton, and Claude Anderson. Opal attended the Hymera School System, Sullivan Co. IN. She was born and raised on the family farm located near Hymera, Sullivan Co. IN. Opal married John Francis Stropes on April 7, 1937 at age 16, in Sullivan, Sullivan Co. IN. Opal's first child was Charlotte Ann. Opal married John Francis Stropes on April 7, 1937 at age 16, in Sullivan, Sullivan Co. IN. Opal's first child was Charlotte Ann. Opal and John lived in Linton, Greene Co., IN, where she continued to reside while John was in the US Navy during World War II. Following the war two sons were born. John took a factory job in Indianapolis, IN, and after two short household moves to Paragon, and Martinsville, Morgan Co. IN, they relocated to the West side of Indianapolis, IN. They had two more children, both girls: Pamela Sue Greer, Taylor (born Stropes), and Vickie Lynn Love (born Stropes). Opal and John were divorced in Greene Co. IN. Opal remained in Indianapolis, found employment, and continued to raise her 4 youngest children. Opal worked locally as a domestic and at several business establishments, while continuing to be the sole provider for her 4 youngest children. She ultimately acquired a position with a local building supply company in their accounting department. Opal met Burt Williamson Carroll, from Garden City, Kansas, and they were married on June 6, 1964 in Marion Co. IN. Several years after her marriage to Burt, Opal was able to become a stay-at-home Mother and Wife. She saw her 4 youngest children graduate from high school and begin their own lives. Soon both Opal and Burt became Grandparents. Burt and Opal were both blessed with a strong bond in their marriage. Opal was quite family oriented. She especially enjoyed visiting with her parents, brothers, sisters and their extended families. She looked forward to annual Marshall family reunions in Sullivan Co. and visited all family members in Greene and Sullivan IN counties when the opportunity came up. She also enjoyed seeing the success of her children. She was most proud to see her two sons both graduate from college. Opal and Burt enjoyed traveling when they could, being Grandparents, photography, and gathering family mementos; memories of each child. In 1993 her beloved husband, Burt, passed away. Thereafter Opal's health began to fail. In their later years both Burt and Opal were assisted greatly by their Granddaughter, Melinda, and her then Husband Jeff Jewell. She also became quite close to her youngest brother Claude Anderson Marshall, and his family. Opal Ernestine Carroll Stropes (born Marshall), passed away October 6 1997, in Indianapolis IN. She was buried in the Marshall Family Plot at Long's Chapel Cemetery, near Hymera, IN, within a mile of the farm house where she and her siblings had all been born and raised.
