Opal Evelyn (Hopkins) Jones passed away peacefully on July 14, 2011 in Eureka, California, with her loving family by her side. Born on January 26, 1918, in Talihina, Oklahoma, Opal was a resilient, little redheaded country girl. The oldest daughter of Hoppy and Josie Hopkins, her main role as a child was to look after her younger siblings. Along with tending to her chores, she loved school and was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to attend. Reading was a cherished passion of hers and up until almost the end, she zealously read. Opal claimed that the happiest day of her life was when her boyfriend, Sam Jones asked her to marry him. They married in 1933 at the age of fifteen and seventeen. In 1969, Sam's untimely death changed her life forever. They had been happily married for 36 years. Sitting around the table listening to her childhood memories of life in the Midwest was one of the delights of family and friends. Stories of living in a boxcar which had been converted to living quarters, as her father worked to bring the railroad west, and making friends with Hobos who stopped by their camp for a bite to eat, were not only fascinating and often funny, but also a history lesson in its finest form. Opal was a proud American and a member of the Ladies Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Ferndale. She was especially proud of her brother, Wayne, who served in the Korean War. She was a flag waver that strongly believed in the right to vote and held the Inspector of the Cuddeback Precinct Election Board position in Carlotta for many years. She believed in the Right to Bear Arms and up until a few years ago, she kept a loaded pistol hidden by her bedside. That ended when her son happened upon it one day. Opal was a member of the Van Duzen River Grange for more than 50 years. You could find her waiting tables or taking tickets at the Carlotta Pancake Breakfast every second Sunday of the month (excluding July & August). Opal had many wonderful qualities and skills. She was a young-at-heart person who connected with all ages. Children and teens pulled at her heartstrings and often got their way. She was PTA president at Cuddeback Elementary School in the 60's and a Cub Scout den mother for her sons. She loved to cook and even though the presentation was not always so inviting, it tasted pretty darn good! Her wedding cake creations were enjoyed by many. Some of her happiest days were cooking for friends, family and especially for her sons' friends. "Boy, those boys could eat!" she would say. Square dancing with the "Flutter Wheelers" was her longtime hobby. She belonged to a sweet little sewing club for many years and created beautiful garments for herself, friends and family members. Many square dance dresses with matching men's shirts were sewn with love by her. Perhaps the only faults her family ever recognized were that she never slowed down, she gave too much of herself, and after being a longtime LA Dodger fan for many, many years decided to switched hats and joined the lowdown Giants! We can thank her wonderful supportive friend, Deloris Sallady, for that one! Thank you, Deloris, for being such a good friend to mom. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, on the hill in Fortuna. Opal leaves behind her longtime companion and great guy; Chuck Corwin of Fortuna, California, sister, Viola Johnson of Snelling, California, brother and sister-in-law, Wayne and Shirley Hopkins of Moore, Oklahoma; son-in-law, Farrell Swain of Sitka, Alaska, daughter, Sibyl Hanson of Junction City, Oregon, son, Danny Jones of Alta, California, and son and wife, Dave and Connie J. Jones of Eureka. Grandchildren; Glenda, Farrell Jr. (Butch), Gayle, Joe, JoAnn, Steve, Bruce, Chad, Steven, Heather, Ross, Riley, Karlie and Hannah. She leaves nineteen Great-grandchildren, eleven Great-great-grandchildren along with several nieces, nephews and oh, so many friends too numerous to mention. Opal was preceded in death by her husband, Sam and their infant son, daughter; JoAnn Swain, Great-granddaughters; Tammy Gangle and Mandy Swain, parents; Hoppy & Josie Hopkins, brothers; Lester and Clarence Hopkins, brother and sister-in-law; W.J. and Elsie Hopkins, sister and brother-in-law; Velma and Baldy Hall and daughter-in-law, Connie L. Jones. The family would like to thank Granada Care Home for the wonderful, professional care given to Opal during her final days. We would wholehearted recommend the facility to anyone. Friends are invited to gather for a visitation on Thursday, July 21, 2011 from 1-5:00 PM at Goble's Fortuna Mortuary, 560 12th Street, Fortuna. Services will be held at the chapel on Friday, July 22, 2011 at 10:00 AM under the direction of Goble's Fortuna Mortuary, Fortuna. If you are so inclined, please donate to your favorite charity.
