Hartley, 84, of Salem, died Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2001, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. Born July 25, 1917, in Hillsboro, she was the daughter of Howard and Zeffa (Nichols) Billingsley. She married Ivan Rossell on March 7, 1936, Kahoka, MO. He died in 1954. She married Edgar Hartley Sept. 3, 1955, in Algona, IA. He died in 1991. She lived most of her life in the Salem and Hillsboro area and attended the Hillsboro School. She worked at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant during World War II and worked at the Sheaffer Pen in Mount Pleasant for 11 years. She also drove a school bus for many years. She was an animal lover and raised dogs. She also helped on the farm, as well as cooking and baking for people. Mrs. Hartley attended the Salem Congregational Church and had attended Oakland Mills Church in earlier years. She helped with the Salem Old Settlers Celebration, was a former member of the Order of Eastern Star, and was a member of the Salem Saddle Club. Survivors include one daughter, Rosalie Boecker of Hillsboro; one stepdaughter, Barbara Pitman, of Bloomfield; one stepson, Jack Hartley of Glendale, AZ; three brothers, Raymond Billingsley of Mount Pleasant, Kenneth Billingsley of Fairfield, and Floyd Billingsley of Oquawka, IL.; two grandsons; four great-grandchildren; six stepgrandchildren; several stepgreat-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Besides both of her husbands, she was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, and four brothers. The funeral for Mrs. Hartley will be at 10:30 a.m. today at the Salem Congregational Church, with the Rev. Harold Dorsey officiating. Burial will be in the Salem East Cemetery. Memorials have been established for the Salem Fire Department and the Fellowship Cup. Arrangements are under the direction of Olson-Powell Memorial Home.
