Services are 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 3, 2017 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Belle Plaine with Father Mike Mescher and Deacon Joe Behounek officiating. Burial will take place at Oak Hill Cemetery, Belle Plaine. Visitation is 4-7 p.m. Tuesday, May 2, 2017 at Hrabak-Neuhaus Funeral Service in Belle Plaine with a Vigil Service at 6:30 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service Wednesday at the Church. She attended Belle Plaine Schools. Following school, she married Frank Van Kerckvoorde on October 29, 1946. Together they worked the farm where they raised their two children. After retiring from farming, Opal worked at the nursing home as a cook and cared for many people in Belle Plaine and the county working in Home Health Care. Opal enjoyed crocheting newborn hats and blankets for vets, and gardening and canning. She was a good cook with apple pie always being a favorite. Her faith was important to her and was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Belle Plaine. Opal will be remembered as a very forgiving and loving person with family and extended family being truly important in good times and bad. She is survived by her son, Steve (Charlotte Andresen) Van Kerckvoorde of Ames; daughter-in-law, Renee (Johnathan) Micklos of Fort Worth, TX; grandchildren, Steve Jr. (Jennifer) Van Kerckvoorde of Norwalk, Kristen (Keith) Herndon of Ames, Tabitha Van Kerckvoorde of Sioux City, and Mindy (Chad) Martin of Cedar Rapids, IA; great-grandchildren, Dylan, Sophia, Ethan, Victoria, Seth, Mikayla, Olivia, Raegan, Sam, Kate, and Jake; siblings, Ruth Baker of Ankeny, Carroll Border of Belle Plaine and Katie (Larry) Roth of Belle Plaine; along with many nieces, nephews, family and friends. Opal is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Frank; son, Richard Van Kerckvoorde; and grandpa and grandma Mumby.
