| Description | : | Opal Marie Niemeyer, the daughter of Anfin "Tonyy" and Agatha Marie (Shaw) Slattenow was born March 16, 1912 at Ontario, Iowa. At the age of three, she moved with her family to Hayfield, where they farmed and later operated a combined hotel, grocery store and meat market. Opal attended school at Hayfield and then graduated from Crystal Lake High School in 1930. For eight years she worked as a telephone operator in Crystal Lake.
