Description	:	Opal Marie Underbakke was baptized and confirmed at the Burr Oak United Methodist Church. It was also the church where the celebration of life services were held on November 21, 2016. She attended grade school at the Pierce-Underbakke School # 6 and graduated from the Canton High School in 1942. After graduation she attended Upper Iowa University in Fayette, Iowa where she graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in English/Speech Education. She went on to pursue her Master's Degree at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa. Opal had a passion for learning and shared her knowledge in the educational field for more than 65 years. She taught in both private and public schools and also tutored many individuals. She developed and implemented a large number of drama and speech programs. She was always available to help her students. in addition to her teaching she had a love for reading, traveling to many places in the United States, Mexico, Europe, and the Bahamas, and gardening where she won many awards for her horticultural designs. She had a strong religious faith, and was actively involved in the church activities. Opal Marie Underbakke married Harold "Bud" E. Smith in 1954. They later divorced. They were the parents of: Donny (Marcia) Smith of Blooming Prairie, Minnesota; Brenda (Bill) Copp of Belton, Missouri; Roberta Underbakke of Minneapolis, Minnesota; Klee (Bich Ha) Smith of Owatonna, Minnesota; and Jennie (Lou ) Espada of Palm Coast, Florida. There were 12 grandchildren: Jennifer Gilman, Brittany Smith, Meagen (Brooks) Peek, Kristopher (Jerika) Copp, Steffanie (Brian) Kellogg, Mikeal Copp, Mariesa Magnuson (Tony Bock), Cassius Smith, Damien Smith, Quentin Smith, Chase Smith, and Shania Espada. Opal had eight great-grandchildren: Felisha and Grace Gilman, Brooklyn, Reagen, Addisen, and Teghan Peek, Brecken Kellogg, and Jett Copp; In addition to her children and grandchildren Opal was survived by her brother Dale (Eleanor) Underbakke, sister Shyrlee (Craig) Hill, brother-in-law Frank sever, sister-in-law Donna Underbakke and many nieces, nephews, and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Louie and Violet Underbakke; brothers Maynard and Robert Underbakke, sister Roberta Sever; her former husband, Harold "Bud" Smith, and sister-in-law Mary and Kenneth Rose.
