Description	:	Ophelia Y. Avey, 82, a 55 year resident of Leavenworth, joined her family in the stars Thursday morning, December 21, 2006, from Highline Care Center in East Wenatchee. She was born Ophelia Y. Rutherford on February 1, 1924, near La Follette, TN to Noah and Martha E. (Baird) Rutherford, the third of four children. Avey, 82, a 55 year resident of Leavenworth, joined her family in the stars Thursday morning, December 21, 2006, from Highline Care Center in East Wenatchee. She was born Ophelia Y. Rutherford on February 1, 1924, near La Follette, TN to Noah and Martha E. (Baird) Rutherford, the third of four children. They traveled across country to Leavenworth, WA in 1927, and settled into a home at 206 Park Ave. There, she went to school and church in the community until she met and married Dallas M. Avey in 1940. They lived in a home on Peshastin Creek until 1953, when they moved to the coast to follow the construction her husband was in. There were many moves until she settled in Mt. Vernon to raise her family. She lived there for ten years until 1964, when she moved back to the Leavenworth area. There, she began her life with Mantle C. Avey. They worked together in the local orchards around the area and made their home at 237 Prospect Street. She was one of the original members of Leavenworth's Marlin Bell Choir from 1978 to 1994, when she retired because of hearing loss. She enjoyed meeting new people and traveling with the choir. She always felt there was a new adventure around the bend. Her quiet time was spent gardening, reading, crocheting, embroidering and her famous quilting. She also enjoyed fishing, camping and sharing a huckleberry bush with the bears and spending time with her extended family. She was involved with the Grange Craft Fairs during Mai Fest and the Christmas Lighting in Leavenworth. She was honored when asked to display her quilts in the September quilt show, winning numerous praises and awards. Her quilts have also won many awards in the Douglas County Fair in Waterville. Those who know her quilts and doilies, know how particular and pleased she was with her handmade works of art. Her last few years were spent just enjoying walks, reading and visits from her family. She is survived by two daughters, Peggy A. Bliudnikas (Arunas) of Grand Rapids, MI and LaVetta I. West (Bill) of Snohomish and a son, Ralph M. Avey (Arti) of Marysville; eight grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by Dallas M. Avey and her husband, Mantle C. Avey; daughter, Dallas Marie Avey; an infant son; her son, Charles B. Avey; a grandson, Neal B. Avey; her parents; and two sisters, Dorothy Stevens, of La Follette, TN and R. Pauline Morse, of Kelso; and a brother, Curtis Rutherford, of Kelso. Of her extended family, she leaves behind Don and Linda Avey and family of Waterville; Bob and Sandi Avey and family of Stockton, CA and Diana Tunnell and family, also of Stockton; several nieces, nephews; and sister-in-law, Margaret Rutherford of Kelso. A Funeral Service of Commemoration to Celebrate the Life of Ophelia Y. Avey will be held on Friday, December 29, 2006, at Ward's Funeral Chapel at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Bob Jackson officiating. Visitation will be held on Thursday, December 28, 2006, at Ward's Funeral Chapel from 2 to 5 p.m. Ward's Funeral Chapel, Leavenworth is in charge of the arrangements.
