KARN, whose Rochester business career spanned almost 60 years and distinguished him as the city's longest continuous merchant, died of a heart attack at 6 a.m. today in his home at 1602 Main street. He was 80 years of age. Mr. Karn had suffered a stroke two weeks ago, but his death was unexpected by family and friends. He was founder of the Coffee Shop, popular restaurant and meeting place at 710 Main street, and was active in its operation until his final illness. Included in the bsiness is the Karn hotel, which occupies the second and third floors of the Coffee Shop building. The Coffee Shop began 40 years ago this September. Mr. Karn's first restaurant was opened here in 1907, however, and his local business career also included the operation of a bakery and a women's wear store. For many years active in civic affairs, he served three terms on the City Council in the 1930s and also was a member of the Water Works board of trustees. Mr. Karn was the last survivor of the city's turn-of-the-century businessmen. His first restaurant was the American cafe, opened in 1907 where Harvey's Dime Store now is located and moved in 1911 southward across the alley. In 1920, he sold the cafe and opened a retail and wholesale bakery outlet at his starting point northward across the alley. But the restaurant business again beckoned, and he resumed this operation a year later at that location. In September, 1926, the Coffee Shop was opened in the room where Mr. Karn also had been operating a women's wear store for five years. While still running the American cafe, he had opened a baking business on Main street ground now used by the city parking lot. Later he formed the Rochester Baking company with partners Nobby TRUE and Pat MURPHY, erecting the present Nickles Bakery Building on East Eighth street. In 1914, Karn launched his own bakery in a building at the rear of the present Snyder's Jewelry. He is credited with being the first in Indiana to conduct house-to-house sale of baked goods to country homes. The bakery, which also served his restaurant, operated 28 years until the advent of World War II. The Karn hotel was opened about 1914, before the Coffee Shop occupied the downstairs room. It later was leased to others for 30 years but Mr. Karn resumed its operation in 1957. His son, Harold [KARN], long has been a partner with his father in the restaurant and hotel operation and in recent years assumed active management. Born June 13, 1886, in Chili, Mr. Karn was the son of Reuben and Millicent MURPHY KARN and had lived in this city since the age of three. His first marriage was to Grace BURGNER, who preceded in death, and his second marriage was to Margaret O'KANE on Oct. 4, 1911. She survives. The Karns had resided in their Main street home 46 years. Mr. Karn was a past master of the Masonic lodge and also belonged to Knights of Pythias, I.O.O.F. lodge and Chamber of Commerce. Surviving, besides the wife, are a daughter, Mrs. Robert (Dolores) DOCTOR, Angola; the son, Harold; two brothers, Harry [KARN], Macy, and Russell [KARN], Rochester, and four grandchildren, Richard, John and Jean KARN and William DOCTOR. Two brothers, Walter and Byron [KARN], preceded in death. Last rites will be Sunday at 2 p.m. in the Zimmerman Brothers funeral home with the Rev. Donald LAMBERT officiating, assisted by the Masonic lodge. Burial will be in the I.O.O.F. cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 2 p.m. Saturday.
