Verna Green ------- Pioneer Resident Laid To Final Rest Tuesday O. S. JONES CALLED BY DEATH AT FT. COLLINS COLO. WEDNESDAY The body of Oren S. Jones, pioneer resident of the Spirit Lake and Lake Park communities, was brought to Spirit Lake Sunday, following he death of Mr. Jones in Ft. Collins. Funeral services were held at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon at the Bumgardner Funeral Home with Rev. Roy H. Cox in charge. C. E. Narey of the Twilight lodge gave the Masonic charge both at the funeral and at the grave. Burial was at the Lakeview cemetery beside the body of his mother and wife. Oren S. Jones was born in Potter county, Penn., January 29, 1853, the son of John and Elmira Jones, and passed away at Ft. Collins, Colo., at the Laramie county hospital on Wednesday morning, March 13, 1940, at 11 o'clock, at the age of 87 years, 1 month and 13 days. He had been taken to the hospital for medical care, ten days prior to his death. Oren was a lad of about 12 years when his father went off to fight in the Civil war, and his mother served as a Civil war nurse. His father was killed during the conflict, and Oren and his mother and his step-father, Mr. Lowell, came to Iowa, as her father, Joseph Clark, had come here to homestead. Oren was a young man of about 15 when they came to Dickinson county, and he followed several trades, including trapping, and he carried the mail between Storm Lake and Lake Park. As soon as he was of age he took a homestead near Rush Lake, north of Lake Park, and lived here for a number of years, while also engaging in the livestock business. His mother passed away shortly after he went there to live. He married Susan Dingwall of Lake Park about a year after taking up farming, and they were the parents of a daughter, Mrs. Elmira Rasmussen, who now lives at Onawa, Iowa. While living at the farm his first wife passed away and was laid to rest at Lakeview cemetery. He later married Clara Hunkins of Lake park in 1885. Mr Jones operated a grocery store in Spirit Lake for a short time and in May, 1877, with a cousin, J. A. Ellis, formed a partnership for the general trade. Mr. Ellis had also operated a grocery store prior to this. They started up in the old Baxter building, but finding that to much to one side moved up on Hill St., near where the present Arp store is, and when the Beacon block was completed in 1879, they were the first to occupy the new store rooms. They sold out in the spring of 1880 to F. W. Barron. After selling the store, Mr. Jones returned to his farm and continued in the livestock business, running a herd, and buying cattle from farmers, and driving them into Spirit Lake for shipment to city markets. He served for a time as county supervisor. He was one of the original stockholders in the First National bank and was serving as its vice president when he moved to Ft. Collins, Colo., for his health in 1906. After he moved there, the president, John Cravens was killed, and Mr. Jones returned here for several years to assist with the work at the bank. He was still a stockholder in the bank at the time of his death. He was also interested in the Lake Park bank during the early years. Mr. Jones' wife passed away in 1928 and was laid to rest in Silver Lake cemetery in Lake Park. To this union six children had been born, and they survive with the daughter, Mrs. Rasmussen. They are Mrs. Joy Stouffer of Salina, Calif., Mrs. Mamie Justus of Oakland, Calif., Oscar of Detroit, Mich., Mrs. Elva Middleton of Laramie, Wyo., Charles of Ft. Collins, and Myron of Boise, Idaho. He is also survived by several grandchildren and two brother-in-law, Frank Fliss of Spirit Lake and Charles Hunkins of Lake Park. Mr. Jones had several lodge affiliations. He was initiated into Twilight Lodge, A.F. & A.M. in 1892, and was raised to a Master Mason in 1894. He was also a member of the Commandery at Cedar Rapids and the Shrine at Sioux City. He continued his membership in the Masonic Lodge at Ft. Collins until the time of his death. This affair has been kept pretty quite, but for some time past Oren's friends have understood that his peculiar conduct meant nothing less than matrimony. Certainly none of our young men deserve, or can more fully appreciate the abiding comforts attending such a state than himself. Commencing life in this community a few years ago as a poor boy, with on endowment other than that yielded by Nature, he has by industry, frugality and prudence acquired a comfortable estate, and has won a good standing in the community by his straightforward business character, public spirit and genial intercourse. He has secured a companion that is respected and admired for many excellent qualities, and that their union will result in nothing but happiness is our wish. Mr. and Mrs. Jones have settled down to house keeping already in their comfortable little home, and have commenced married life in a very sensible manner. Peirce, Mr. Oren Jones and Miss Clara Hunkins. The groom has spent most of his life among our people, and has fairly achieved success and esteem of all who know him well. The bride has been known here but little more than a year, but her native modesty, kindly disposition and other gifts appreciated in woman have won for her a good opinion and friendship of many.
