Read More	Orla "Odie" Reist Kawohi-o-kalani Myers Maaskant April 28, 1922 – January 16, 2013 Orla Reist Kawohi-o-kalani Myers Maaskant was born in Los Angeles, California on April 28, 1922. Orla’s nickname was “Odie.” She was given this nickname by her mother Lilly Reist Myers. Her father was Orla Ernest Myers. With two Orla’s in the house, mother Lilly called baby Orla by her short Hawaiian name “KA-Vo-Hee” which to Orla sounded like “Oh-Dee” and this became her family nickname. Orla graduated from Santa Barbara State College where she received her degree and teaching credential. She also met her future husband, Cornelius “Dutch” Maaskant of Hanford, California. After Dutch served in the U.S. Navy as an officer during WWII, he was stationed in Washington D.C. after serving several years in the South Pacific. Orla joined him in Washington D.C. and they were married at the Anacostia Naval Air Station in 1945. In 1946 they drove across the country back to Hanford, California. In 1951, they had their only daughter; Nancy Reist Maaskant. Dutch and Orla were very active in the Hanford Community. They had many wonderful friendships with whom they played golf, cards and traveled. Dutch and Odie were also fortunate enough to travel the world with their dear friends; the Hagens and the Andersons. They visited China, South Africa, Holland, Germany, Japan, Egypt, Australia and New Zealand. They both lived life to the fullest and enjoyed every minute of it. Orla kept the books and records for her husband’s land leveling and later his farming business. Later in life she became interested in painting with watercolors and took classes from her dear friends Bob and Sally Marcellus. She remained active in the Kings Art Center from the time it was originally founded and served as their treasurer for over 18 years. Odie was a friendly, positive and fun person to be with. Her greatest joy in life was her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She stressed proper etiquette and the importance of a good education. She loved listening to them tell her about all of their interests and accomplishments at school and later in their careers. She was a very proud grandmother and never missed an opportunity to talk about the successes of her daughter, granddaughters and great-grandchildren. Orla had a long happy life. She will be greatly missed by her daughter; Nancy and son-in-law; Arne Tutschulte, her two granddaughters; Correna Simpson and husband Bradley, their children; Tanner and Sierra, and Heatherjean Lassiter and husband John, and their sons; Johnny Jr. and Brock. A Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, January 23, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at People’s Funeral Chapel; 501 N. Douty Street, Hanford, CA 93230 559-584-5591 with a private interment at Grangeville Cemetery in Armona, California.
