Orlando Theophilus “Tommy” Sime was born July 6, 1906 in Sumner Township, Winneshiek County, Iowa, the son of Thomas E. and Agnes (Krogsund) Sime. He was baptized and confirmed at Lincoln Lutheran Church, rural Ridgeway. In 1913, Orlando moved to Lincoln Township, where the Simes established their family farm south of Ridgeway. He attended the Ridgeway school system, taking his senior year at Decorah and graduating from Decorah High School with the Class of 1924. After graduating, he returned to farming the family farm. Orlando was united in marriage with Olive Luella Gullickson on June 24, 1936 at Lincoln Lutheran Church. He was a loving and devoted husband to Olive for more than 68 years. Their union was blessed with three children: Treva, David and Donald. Orlando and Olive farmed south of Ridgeway for many years. He was a skilled farmer and received many awards and citations for his farming practices. In 1988, he and Olive built a house in Ridgeway where they spent their retirement years. Following his retirement, Orlando turned his attention to woodworking. He made many beautiful keepsakes for his family and members of the community. Orlando is remembered as a leader of the Ridgeway community. He was a longtime member of Lincoln Lutheran Church and later Peace Lutheran Church, served as treasurer of the Lincoln Lutheran Congregation, was a council member of the Lincoln Lutheran and Peace Lutheran congregations and served on two call committees. Orlando served as secretary of the Lincoln Farmers Creamery; served three terms on the Ridgeway School Board and was a member of the Area and Population Committee during the Howard/Winneshiek School reorganization. He was a 4-H Leader for the Lincoln Boosters, a member of the Winneshiek County Farm Bureau Board and the Farm Service Board. Orlando also was a board member and insurance agent for the Norwegian Mutual Insurance Association. Orlando and Olive became residents of the Aase Haugen Home in April of 2001. His quiet dignity, warm smile and peaceful strength were an inspiration to the many people he touched while residing at Aase Haugen. Survivors include a daughter, Treva (Byron) Thorsen of Huntley, Illinois; two sons, David Sime of Diamond Head, Mississippi, and Donald (Anna) Sime of Libertyville, Illinois; eight grandchildren, Eric (Kelly) Thorsen of Cincinnati, Ohio, Karen Thorsen of Seattle, WA, Tim (Vicky) Sime of Sartell, Minnesota, Jennifer (Eric) Sime-Robinson of Berkeley, California, Rebecca (Mark) Nagasawa of Scottsdale, Arizona, Kathryn Sime (Joseph Cheatwood) of Chicago, Illinois, Carolyn (Brian) Gorman of Washington, D.C., Jessica Sime of Chicago, Illinois; and eight great grandchildren, Natalie, Michael and Andrew Thorsen of Cincinnati, Ohio, Gracine and Elise Sime of Sartell, Minnesota, Liv and Anni Robinson of Berkeley, California and Mai Nagasawa of Scottsdale, Arizona.
