Read More	[Waverly Independent Newspaper:] Orlo Max Sutherland was born on Dec. 9th, 1897, and died on Monday Dec. 17, 1917, at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Sutherland, north of town, aged 20 years. Orlo was always a studious boy and at the age of 15 he entered the Waverly high school, and after attending three and one half years he was compelled to give up his studies on account of failing health. He submitted to a surgical operation and for a time he seemed to be making satisfactory recovery and he entered the Waterloo business college where he kept up his studies for about a year when his health again failed him and he was again compelled to give up the work. Since that time he had been growing gradually feebler until the end came on Monday. He was a young man of sterling qualities and to know him was to love and respect him, and his death is sincerely mourned, not only by the immediate but by his entire acquaintance. He leaves to mourn his untimely death his sorrowing parents, one sister, Miss Hilda, his Grandfather and Grandmother Sutherland and his grandmother, Mrs. Martha Gallagher, and other more distant relatives. Funeral services were held at the home on Wednesday at noon, Rev. A. R. Rice officiating and the remains were laid to rest in Harlington cemetery. [Waverly Democrat newspaper (December 19, 1917)] PROMISING BOY OF WARREN TWP. DEAD _____ Orlo Sutherland, of Warren Township Passed Away Monday; Had High Ambitions. _____ Orlo M. Sutherland, the 20-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Sutherland, of Warren township, died at the home of his parents at 4:30 Monday morning, after a short illness. The young man has always resided in Bremer county, where he was well known. After attending the rural school, he entered the high school of this city, and would have graduated with the class of 1916, but on account of illness he had to give up his studies and later submitted to an operation. The fact that he was unable to graduate was not only a disappointment to himself, but to all the members of his class, who deeply regretted that he was compelled to give up his studies. Some time ago the young man entered a business college and was making excellent progress with his work, when he was again compelled to give up his studies on account of failing health. Since last fall he has been at the home of his parents, and up to a short time ago he seemed to be regaining his strength. But again it was noticed that he was failing, and in spite of the best of care and attention, he passed away. As a boy, Orlo Sutherland was a favorite with his playmates and as he grew to manhood he commanded the respect of all with whom he came in contact. He was always cheerful, a boy of good judgment who looked ever on the bright side of life. As a boy on the farm, he performed his tasks with pleasure, and as a student he enjoyed his work. He was a devoted son and looked forward to the time when he would be able to return to his parents full measure for what they had done for him. But in the bloom of young manhood he was cut down, and his death is a severe loss. The funeral was held from the home today, Wednesday, at 12 o'clock, Rev. Albert R. Rice officiating, and burial was in Harlington cemetery. The grief-stricken relatives, in the hour of their deep sorrow, have the sympathy of a large circle of friends.
