He grew up in Woolwich and attended Morse High School. He briefly worked at Bath Iron Works before joining the Merchant Marine. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and later served with the Merchant Marine again. He worked at B.I.W. from 1955 to 1991 in the Engineering Department.
