Funeral services over the remains of Mrs. Orpha Jackson Brown, who died at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. T.C. Jackson in this city, Friday morning, March 2, were held from the family home Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock in charge of Rev. Chas. E. Perkins, pastor of the Congregational church, assisted by Rev. P.H. Hawk, of the M.E. church. The song service at the funeral was in charge of the Congregational choir. May beautiful floral offerings, received from loving friends and relatives, covered the casket in which lay the remains of Mrs. Brown, among the designs being a floral star sent by the P.E.O. society, of which the deceased was a member. Interment was made in the Purdom cemetery. Following were the pallbearers: C.K. Miller, S.W. Manning, R.R. McBeth, Robt. Sloan, H.L. MeGrew, R.B. Rowley. Below is given part of the funeral discourse delivered by Mr. Perkins at the funeral services: Mrs. Orpha Jackson Brown was born at Mt. Zion, in this county, April 9, 1876. The time of earthly life allotted to her, came to an end on the morning of Friday, March 2, 1906. She was thus 29 years, 10 months and 23 days at the time of her death. Her parents moved to Keosauqua in 1880, when she was child of four years, and this has ever since been her home. Orpha was married to Ord Rankin Brown June 3, 1897, who died on the 17th of last October. She was a perfectly healthy girl, to all appearance, until she reached the age of fourteen or fifteen, when from illness she was forced to leave school. After a time her father put her in school in Galesburg, Ill., but the confinement and study were again too much for her, and she returned home, not venturing to try school again. She recovered her health and was fairly well until two years ago last August. At that time her serious sickness commenced, and she has been gradually losing in the effort for life ever since. Mrs. Brown was very frail and feeble at the time of her husband's death last October. She came home to her father's house soon there after, and here, with all that parental love could do for her service, her last days were spent. She was only confined to her bed for a little more than a week before the end. Mrs. Brown was a member of the Ladies Guild of the Congregational church and of the P.E.O. society. I remember as though it were yesterday, the quiet, happy June evening when Ord and Orpha, here in this room were made man and wife. I remember the radiant beauty of the young bride as she stood with her hand in the hand of her youthful lover and husband. They were in the flush and glory of life's early years. The world was before them and the path beckoning their feet seemed bordered with soft greenery and brightest flowers. Less than five years ago, I spoke my message of sympathy our of a full heart, over the coffin of that young husband. Now the wife is gone, following closely on; and we choke back the tears that will brim our eyes as we think of the fading in death of love and youth. O thank God and our Saviour Christ, that there is something better to think of than the fading dream of Ord's and Orpha's lives. He went, leaving her desolate. Now she has gone to him. And could you see them, you who love them, as some glad day you may see them, by the grace of God, you would see more than the manly health and radiant beauty of that wedding evening restored. You would see them with the happy light of immortality shining in their eyes, their faces reflecting the glow of health which no wasting sickness can pale again. There is a blessing for those who mourn. May it come to this home and abide in your sorrowing hearts, for the lightening of your grief. Henceforth you have a treasure in heaven not there before. Your will think upon your treasure. And the daughter, the sister, living there and loving you, will draw your lives closer and more close to the dear God, who even in this grievous event, has shown forth in all perfectness, his loving kindness to your darling. Trust you in the Lord and serve him, trust you in the Lord and with patience wait his day.
