Description	:	Orris D. Shippy was born March 4, 1915 to Orlando and Hazel Shippy, at the farm south of Colome, SD. A little sister, Eyla Orene "Doll," joined them in 1917. He studied at a one-room grade school, Colome High School, and also took a creamery course at Brookings, SD, where he learned to make delicious cottage cheese, and help his family sell cream. He studied at a one-room grade school, Colome High School, and also took a creamery course at Brookings, SD, where he learned to make delicious cottage cheese, and help his family sell cream. Orris, a hardworking practical man, was a farmer through and through. He loved growing crops, trees, and gardens, especially watermelons and strawberries. He worked with his Dad to build their farm and ranch and raise purebred Hereford cattle. They also raised hogs and sheep, but he had a special interest in his hobby of keeping bees. He loved the wonderful sweet clover honey, which provided a healthy sweetener and lots of memories for his family, as they helped extract it from his hives. He met Ruby Mudgett at family gatherings, as his Aunt Margaret was married to her Uncle Lee Funk, in whose house they played dominoes and had lots of fun. At age 25, he married her on June 17, 1940, and celebrated their 70th anniversary last June. In their years together they worked hard on the farm, enjoying six children and their spouses, grandchildren and their spouses and children. Orris loved each one so very much, spending time with them to visit, play lots of games, work together, build custom items, help them and give them his warm smiles and hugs. He loved to travel with his family on trips and achieved his dream of visiting missionary friends, Bob and Betty Carlson, in Japan. He served on the board for Calvary Chapel, Rural and Colome Schools, as well Sunshine Bible Academy near Miller, SD. He enjoyed attending The Gideons and supported their distribution of Bibles. After retirement, he loved growing flowers and spent much time as a gardener. He also helped his son and grandson on the farm as the official "fixer-of-fences." He and Ruby enjoyed twenty winters in Arizona, with their children and grandchildren, where he loved raising another garden all winter long. The past five years they resided at the Elder Inn in Winner SD, where they tended the flowers, but in recent years he suffered from dementia, kidney and heart disease. He "graduated" to the Long Term Care Center on December 29, 2010, where he fell and broke his hip one month later. Orris Deleo Shippy, 95, of Colome and Winner went home to be with the Lord on Monday, February 14, 2011. He was preceded in death by his parents and only sister, Orene Weidner, one son Larry, one grandson Lonnie (Larry), and one daughter-in-law Jan Shippy (Kyle), and a nephew, Daniel Weidner. His family invites you to celebrate his life at a memorial service on March 5th (Saturday) at 10:30 AM, at the Orthodox Presbyterian Church in Winner (505 Lincoln St.) The family looks forward to visiting with extended family and friends during dinner at the 4-H Center at noon. Memorials can be sent to The Gideons International, PO Box 1762, Winner, SD 57580, or donated online. Orris and Ruby enjoyed attending the local Gideons Meetings and supported their distribution of Bibles. Interment will be at the Colome cemetery at a later date, in a private family setting.
