Rev. Steve Hansen officiated the 2:00 p.m. services from the United Methodist Church. Lula Garnes served as organist and Alice Feldmann was soloist. Interment was in Coon Rapids Cemetery. Serving as casket bearers were Curtis Kretzinger, Erich Kretzinger, Robert Kretzinger, Alice Feldmann, Katharin Wandler and Joy Griebenow. Orton, son of Wellman and Verena Bowman Kretzinger, was born July 28, 1905, near Coon Rapids. He attended Coon Rapids schools, graduating with the class of 1923. Orton furthered his education at Simpson College where he received a degree in manual arts and business. Orton was a member of the Simpson College football team. As a young man, Orton worked on the Chautauqua circuit during the summer using his great physical strength with the crew that set up tents. After graduation from Simpson, Orton took graduate courses at Iowa State University. He then taught and coached football at Fontanelle. Later he moved to Carroll, then to Creston, where he was circulation manager for the Des Moines Register. On August 11, 1933, Orton was united in marriage with Bonnie Kilpatrick. Two sons, Karl and Andy, were born to this union. Orton spent his married life in the Coon Rapids community where he farmed with his father. In 1936 he established the John Deere implement dealership in Coon Rapids, a business he operated for 21 years. Orton remained active in farming until just ten years ago. Orton was active in civic and church affairs. He was a member member of the United Methodist Church and served in various church offices, including the building committee for the present church building. For over 20 years Orton was a member of the Coon Rapids Municipal Utilities board. He was Past Master and a 50 year member of Charity Lodge #197 of the Masonic Order. In 1993, Orton moved to Thomas Rest Haven in Coon Rapids. His health worsened suddenly and he was taken to Greene County Medical Center in Jefferson, where he died early Wednesday morning, April 9, 1997 at the age of 91 years, eight months and eleven days. Orton was preceded in death by his parents, and by a sister, Josephine Busch. Survivors include: his wife, Bonnie, of Coon Rapids; two sons, Karl and his wife, Cordy, of Ahwhnee, CA ; and Andy and his wife, Kathy, of Montrose, CO; eight grandchildren; 17 greatgrandchildren; a sister, DeEtte La Fuze, and her husband, Harvey, of Richmond, KY; as well as other relatives and friends. Orton loved gardening , especially raising roses. He enjoyed playing bridge and will be remembered as an avid Iowa State Cyclone fan.
