W. Kinkead and Clerk F. A. Johnson, and found by them to be insane. She was taken to our hospital for care and treatment on Wednesday. Mrs. Carpenter is a woman 35 years of age, is the daughter of J. A. Frazier of Salem. She has separated from her husband, and has lived for a time with Mr. W. R. Long on the J. R. Gillis place, south of town. She claims she was discharged without just causes, that she had some trouble with Mr. Long. It seems on Monday evening last, she was charged with setting fire to the residence of Mr. Long, owned by Mr. Gillis, and did it in this way by soaking the bed clothes with kerosene, then setting them on fire. She then went to the field where Mr. Long was at work, told him his house was on fire and fled via the woods to Mt. Pleasant. Mr. Long reached the house in time to put out the fire. He made the complaint and Mrs. Carpenter was located and arrested by deputy Sheriff Campbell on Tuesday morning. She was taken to the jail where she remained until Wednesday, when she was examined by the commissioners, and found to be insane, was taken to the hospital for treatment. It is certainly a sad case. She came from a good family and her present condition has been caused by trial and trouble, which she had not the strength to endure. – Mt. Pleasant Free Press. The Salem Weekly News June 5, 1924: OBITUARY Orvilla Alice Frazier was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Johnathan Frazier. She was born near Salem, Iowa, January 4, 1867, having grown to womanhood in this community. She was married to Charles H. Carpenter in April 1887. To this union two children were born- Mabel, now Mrs. Beard of Rock Island Ill., and Roy also of Rock Island. For several years, Mrs. Carpenter lived in various places - Mt. Pleasant, Minneapolis, Salem, and Rock Island where the death messenger came to her at the home of her daughter Wednesday night May 28, 1924, after an illness of about three months. At the time of her passing her age was 57 years, 4 months and 24 days. She leaves the following relatives: one daughter, one son, four grandchildren, three sisters - Mrs. White of Kansas City, Miss Lillie Frazier of Minneapolis, Mrs. Frank Davidson of Salem; two brothers - A.L. Frazier of Salem and S.V. Frazier of Minneapolis. Mrs. Carpenter was a birthright member of the Friends church, and her quiet, reverent, worshipful and devoted life spoke clearly and impressively of her faith in and fellowship with God the Father and Christ and Savior.......... The funeral service was held in the Friends church at 2:30 Saturday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Vincent. The singing which was in charge of Rev. Sams was very comforting for the sorrowing relatives. Burial was in Salem Cemetery, South.
