The large gray tombstone was brought from Italy and cost $5,000.00 The Holt County Sentinel, Oregon, Mo., May 29, 1896 Orville Graves Death The news flashed over the wire on Wednesday morning announcing the death of Orville Graves, who for thirty years had been a resident of Holt County and who had always been looked upon as one of her most upright and successful men. He had attained a national reputation as a breeder of the Jersey cow, his "Merry Maiden"having taken the first prize as a butter maker at the World's Fair. At the time of his death and for some twelve years previous he had been one of Maitland's public spirited citizens, and his death will be keenly felt by the citizens of that progressive city. The scythe of time has certainly made a wide sewarth in a short space of time in this family ; within nineteen moths four of this family have answered the dread summons. On Nov. 15, 1864, Miss Daisy Graves passed away and on the 24th of the same month the wife of Mr. Graves died and on Dec. 7th of the same year, another daughter, Mrs. Emil Weber of Forest City, passed over the river, and now the husband and father, whose death is announced as having occurred in S. Louis on Wednesday morning, May 27, 1896. Mr. Graves was born in Washington County, Kentucky August 26, 1832 and therefore within a few months of being 64 years of age. In 1851 he embarked on a steamer at Louisville and took passage for St. Louis, from here took a steamboat for St. Joseph, and thence by team for northeastern Atchison County. In company with two brothers took up a claim on East Tarklo creek and after a year's trial purchased an improved farm on the Nodaway River in Nodaway County. In1865, Mr. Graves disposed of his interest in this farm, with the intention of going farther west, but after traveling around , sight seeing, finally settled in Forest City and engaged in the mercantile business with J.B. Truett. After thus continuing business several years, Geo. Weber became a partner and subsequently , he retired and Emil Weber became a partner with him which continued for a number of years and it was here that was built the foundation for his modest fortune. Mr. Graves then withdrew from this firm and in connection with his son Charles engaged in he mercantile business in Maitland and a few years ago by reason of failing health retired from active business life. From the date of the death of his wife and daughter in 1894, Mr. Graves never seemed to rally and has gradually grown weaker and weaker-the mental over the physical nature has told rapidly upon him. The deceased was a member of Forest City Lodge, A.F. & A., M. Miss Vinsonhaler, daughter of Jacob Vinsonhaler, of Nodaway County, became his wife in February, 1853 and by this union four children were born, Mary B. (Mrs. Emil Weber) Daisy L., Annie E. (Mrs. Robert Zook-Nannie on census) and Charles T., the two former, with their mother being dead and the two latter still living. Charles T., being a member of the Broad Gauge Mercantile company of Maitland. The remains were brought to Maitland for interment, where with Masonic honors they were laid to rest.
