He was born October 24, 1925, a son of Lloyd Alton and Maxine (Bean) Hatfield. Orville joined the Navy in June of 1944. He served on the ship Lookout Mountain, which was torpedoed and sank before it reached Hawaii. He served as a gunner's mate aboard the Charles Smith, a freighter-cargo ship and he later served on the aircraft carrier Bunker Hill, as an apprentice cook. At the end of the war in 1946, Orville returned to Thorp to farm with his father. Orville and Elaine West were married in August 1948 and he later married Freda Marsh in March of 1958. In 1950, he purchased the Thorp Market from Bill Brogard, and he also worked for the Northern Pacific Railroad, Thorp Section. In 1967, at age 41, Orville had to retire due to multiple sclerosis. For as long as possible he tended his "little orchard" in his backyard and had a small greenhouse. Even with his illness, he still had a great outlook on life. Orville was an avid hunter, fisherman and was known as a master gardener. He had a great sense of humor and could put a smile on your face. Orville is survived by his sons, Dan and wife Connie Hatfield, and Daryl Hatfield, both of Corvalis, Oregon and Duane and wife Cheri of Beaverton, Oregon; seven grandchildren; his sisters, Alice Parsel of Ellensburg, and Lois (Dale) Wells of Thorp; Naval comrade and special friend, Ron and his wife, Thelma Kane of Mukilteo; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins; and all of his friends at Royal Vista Care Center. He was preceded in death by his son Dennis, his wife Freda, his parents and his sister Juanita Wells. Viewing will be held at Steward and Williams Chapel on Friday, March 28, from 9 a.m. until 7 p.m. Graveside service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, March 29 at Thorp Cemetery. A reception will follow at Thorp Community Church. The family suggest memorials may be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, P. O. Box 1093, Yakima, WA 98907 or Hospice Friends, 302 E. Second, Ellensburg, WA 98926.
