He fought a long and courageous battle with kidney disease. Orville came to California in 1935, and started work with Safeway. In 1942 he joined the Army and served in the Pacific Theater during which he received the Purple Heart, Philippine Liberation Ribbon, Good conduct Medal and Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal. After the war, he returned to the grocery business and in 1946 married Marguerite Janet Blumer. They returned to Kansas to farm for five years, but returned to California in 1956. Orville owned and operated Village Liquors in Arcata for nearly 15 years, retiring in 1979. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus for over 50 years. Orville was a dedicated and loving family man, as well as a friend to everyone he met. He was happiest playing with his 17 grandchildren. His work ethic and passion could be seen in each of his many projects. An avid gardener and woodworker, he grew the best vegetables and made the best rocking horses. Much of his time was spent tending his land in Hoopa. He received a special “Papal Blessing” from Rome honoring him for all his help with the Hoopa Catholic Church and community. Orville lived his life with integrity and a true kindness that was admired by all those who knew him. He is survived by his wife of nearly 52 years, Janet Cote; his daughters, Carolyn Miller, Joan Rinne and her husband, Merv, Jean Stoller and her husband, Steve, Coleen Cote, Christine Micheli and her husband, Jeff, his sons, Martin, Tom, Mark and Tracy, his brother, Elric Cote and his wife, Clarice, his sister, Geraldine Dyson and her husband, Lyle; his grandchildren, Christopher Miller, Nicole, Ryan and Ashley Rinne, Teresa and Jeremy Cote, Brittany Cote, Stacey and Jeff Schroeder, Mike, John, Melinda, Jimmy, Sarah and Emily Stoller, Ciera Cote, and Nicholas Micheli, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, one brother and his infant son, Richard. Family and friends are invited to a memorial Mass at Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Saturday, Oct. 3, 1998 at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Don Engleson and the Rev. Ralph Monteiro officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Chapel of the Ferns/Sanders Funeral Home, Eureka. The family request that memorial contributions be made in lieu of flowers to St. Joseph Hospital Foundation, 2700 Doibeer St., Eureka 95501, or the Catholic church of Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha, P. O. Box 429, Hoopa 95546.
