On August 31, 1941 Orville was united in marriage to Marcia Alyce Hawthorne in Adair, Iowa. To this union, three children were born. On 22 September 1943, at age 27, Orville enlisted in the US Army. In December of 1944, he was awarded Good Conduct Medal. In June of 1945, He was awarded 5 Bronze Stars for Normandy, France, Ardennes, Rhineland, Central Europe. On August 31, 1945, at age 29, Orville received an Honorable Discharge US Army. Orville died 11 July 1973 in Exira, Iowa, at age 57.
