Description	:	Orvin L. Fossum, age 91, died Sunday, March 1, 2009 at the VA Medical Center in Sioux Falls. Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, March 5, 2009 at Lands Lutheran Church, rural Hudson, SD, with burial in the church Cemetery. Orvin Lee Fossum was born June 28, 1917 eight miles south of Canton, SD the son of Oscar and Gina (Lee) Fossum. Orvin Lee Fossum was born June 28, 1917 eight miles south of Canton, SD the son of Oscar and Gina (Lee) Fossum. He attended Jensvold Country School though 8th grade, Fairview High School for one year, and Augustana Academy till he graduated in 1936. He attended one year of business college in Grand Island, NE. He worked at Farmers Union Brokerage in Sioux Falls before he was drafted into WWII in August of 1941. He served in a field artillery, private first class -B4, during the Battle of Okinawa. After WWII, he served in Korea, coming home in December 1945. Upon his return, he worked at John Morrell & Co. for a short time before becoming a Lincoln County deputy sheriff for 3 years. On September 7, 1947 he married Evelyn D. Gubbrud. The couple farmed south of Canton for 38 years before retiring in 1989. They moved into Canton in December of 1991. He worked at the Canton Good Samaritan Center in maintenance for 11 years. Orvin was a lifelong member of Lands Lutheran Church. In addition to being baptized, confirmed and married at the church, he served as treasurer during the building of the new church. He served on the Highland Township Board as treasurer. He also was a lifetime member of the VFW, serving on the Color Guard, Post Commander of # 3164, District # 1 Commander and served as State Environmental Chairman and National Aide-De-Camp. He also belonged to the American Legion and Moose Lodge. Orvin loved to go dancing with his wife Evelyn, spending time with his family, camping, bowling, and watching sports. Orvin died March 1, 2009 at the VA Hospital in Sioux Falls. He was 91 years of age. Grateful for having shared his life are his wife of 61 years, Evelyn; three daughters- Luella E. (Perry) Schneller, Forest Lake, MN; Eunice C. (Randy) Amundson, Sioux Falls, SD, and Pamela D. (David) Gillespie, Canton, SD; grandchildren, Kimberly (Sean) Irland, Jeannie (George)Breen; granddaughter- in-law, Heidi Bauder Trowbridge; great-grandchildren, Cory, Mariah, Zachary, and Ashley; two brothers, Eldon Fossum and Richard (Arlene) Fossum, Canton; nieces, Faye Fossum, Gail Fossum Shea (Craig); and nephew, Greg Fossum.He was preceded in death by his parents; sister-in-law, Henrietta (Strand) Fossum; grandson Micheal R. Trowbridge; and great-granddaughter, Nicole Trowbridge. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed towards Honor Flight South Dakota care of First Premier Bank, VFW National Home for Children, or Lands Lutheran Chimes Fund.
