Read More	Dave Freed, 88, of Des Moines, passed away on February 25, 2016 at Methodist Medical Center. Born to Oscar Floyd Freed and Jessie Walker Freed, Dave enjoyed growing up in the close-knit community of Huxley, Iowa where his father was the local veterinarian. His love of animals and fondness for the outdoors grew from those early days assisting his father on calls to farms in the area, and hunting and fishing with childhood friends. Following high school, Dave joined the Navy and was stationed in the South Pacific during World War II. Upon returning, he moved to Des Moines and attended Drake University. In 1948, Dave married his high school sweetheart, the woman who remained the center of his life throughout their 68-year marriage, Darlene Dobbe. Lovers of big band music, he and Darlene were great dance partners as well as life partners and together they raised two daughters, Patty Daehn (Michael) of Muncie, Indiana and Susie Jones (Jack) of Waukee. Dave's professional years were spent as a Technical Representative for AM International, a business machines company, where he received several awards for his expertise and 48 years of service. Blessed with many gifts and talents, Dave was meticulous about his home and yard (and most other things), and had the ability to fix almost anything that needed fixing. Often found with his camera around his neck, Dave was considered the "official photographer" in the family, leaving a legacy of photographs that are treasured by his children and grandchildren. He was an avid outdoorsman and an excellent marksman (at age 86 he could still hit a bull's eye) but his greatest passion was fishing and time spent on any lake in his boat. Dave was a devoted, loyal, and loving family man who throughout his years delighted in both the antics and accomplishments of his grandchildren, Katherine Koerber, Emily Ryan (Steve), Corey Shugart, Tyler Shugart (Jill), Kolby Jones (Rebecca) and Abbey Mundt (Marc). In his later years as he battled cancer and several other health problems, his great-grandchildren were a particular bright spot in his life. Dave is preceded in death by his father, mother, sister, and brother. A visitation will be held in the Lounge of Westminster Presbyterian Church (Des Moines), Dave and Darlene's spiritual home for over 60 years, on Thursday, March 3, from 3pm until 5:30pm. A private burial will take place in Ames, Iowa. Arrangements are being handled by Westover Funeral Home and memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
