(Colville, Wash.), 06 Jan. 1917 ~~~...~~~...~~~...~~~ OSCAR GERRISH MOORHEAD In the death of Oscar Gerrish Moorhead, which occurred at his home three miles southeast of Colville, on Friday, January 5, 1917, the result of an acute attack of pneumonia, Stevens county has bee deprived of one of its most energetic, industrious and public spirited citizens. His sterling worth and integrity as a neighbor and a friend in the community where he has lived and prospered for almost a full third of a century has been the remark of the people who form a large circle of his acquaintanceship. He was born at Wiscoi, near Winona, Minnesota, December 18, 1867, the son of Mr. and Mrs. William Morehead. In 1879 the family crossed the plains to Montana, traveling the entire way by wagon. They settled in Beaverhead valley at a point where the city of Dillon, Montana was later built, and engaged in the various pursuits open to the pioneer in a new country. They braved the dangers incident to the Indian wars that raged over that country during the six years of their stay there. In 1885 they came to Colville and established themselves in the business of freighting and were among the first to carry the ores of the mines here over nearly a hundred miles of roads to the nearest railway, and profit also by carrying merchandise on the return journey. Though then only 18 years of age Oscar was manager of the enterprise of his father and it grew to a large business. When the railway came in the fall of 1889, they abandoned freighting and engaged in farming. He settled on the homestead which was his home to the end of his days. His ambition was to be a good citizen. In 1903 he married Miss Margaret Emma Baxter, who survives. Four children, three sons and one daughter, were born of this union: Ross, age 13; Wilma, 11; Oscar G., 8 and Abraham William, 4. The parents of deceased passed away some ten years ago, but two sisters survive; Mrs. Edith M. Miner of Colville, and Mrs. Olive Thompson of Spokane. The funeral will be held from the Prindle undertaking parlors tomorrow afternoon at two o'clock, burial to be given in Evergreen cemetery. Mr. Moorhead, while always a kind and devoted husband and father, providing well for the comfort and well being of his family, he was not unmindful of the uncertainties of life and therefore made suitable and proper provision for their future care and protection by leaving a liberal fund of insurance and a valuable landed estate. Like the pioneer who, through circumstances of hardship and privation, himself failed of the opportunity for a liberal education, he was an advocate of the public school system, and organized a school district to include the homes of himself and his immediate neighbors, and was its clerk at the time of his demise. Life, in its sterner sense and experiences had been his school, and put out of the necessities appearing to him along the pathway of his career, his sympathies had been attuned to the exalted ideals of life and a fixed belief in a future estate as the reward of well spent life of hones toil and generous giving.
