Son of John Cephas McCrary and Keren Leach OBITUARY OSCAR McCRARY Oscar McCrary was born on what is now known as the Clark Brownlee farm near Keosauqua, Iowa, on the 15th day of February, 1853, and died November 3, 1924, his age being seventy-one years, eight months and eighteen days. He was the son of Major J. C. McCrary and one of a family of six children, two of his sisters still surviving. His younger days were spent on a farm and he had the education advantages usual to young men of his time. In January, 1880, he was married to Alice Brewster who died five years later. To this union one child, Carrie McCrary Jorgensen of Aberdeen, Mississippi was born. On the first day of October, 1899, he was married to Rachel E. Duckworth of Keosauqua, Iowa, who is still surviving. He was a member of the Keosauqua Lodge No. 10, Moore Chapter No. 23, Royal Arch Mason, and El Chanan Commandery No. 28, all of Keosauqua. He was one of the most loyal members of these organizations. He was known as a bright Mason. Throughout his long Masonic life he has been connected with one or the other of these three bodies in some official capacity up until the time that failing health required him to cease such activity. He has been a Master of the Blue Lodge, High Priest of the Chapter, Commander of the Commandery. There is not an office in any of these three bodies which he could not completely fill. "Dad", as he was familiarly known, had a keen mind with a breadth of vision that enabled him to thoroughly appreciate the principles of Masonic teaching, and he had the ability, to a marked degree, to communicate his own conception thereof to others. When he laid down the trowel of Masonry and sheathed his sword as a Knight of Templar, the Masonic bodies of Keosauqua and throughout the county and this section of the state lost one of their most useful and best loved brethren. His activities were not confined alone to the Masonic institution. For years he sang in the choir of the Congregational church. He was always interested in movements of the public good, always a booster of his town and county; a man who made and held friends because of his deep human sympathy and kindness of spirit. For two years he operated the Manning Hotel at Keosauqua and served for four years as Postmaster of Keosauqua, Iowa. The funeral services of the late Oscar McCrary were in charge of Keosauqua Lodge No. 10 Keosauqua, Iowa, with an escort from the El Chanan Commandery No. 28 of Keosauqua. They were held from the late residence. Past master Jesse March, of Keokuk, Iowa, was in charge and delivered the Masonic Ritual burial services. Mr. March was assisted by Dr. Lamont, of Keokuk, Iowa, Grand Prelate of the Grand Commandery of Iowa. The funeral sermon was in charge of Rev. Smith of the Methodist church in Birmingham, Iowa, who is a member of the El Chanan Commandery No. 28. There were present a good representation of Masons and Knights Templar from all over the county, testifying to the respect and esteem in which the deceased brother was held. Music was furnished by a ladies quartette of the Congregational church, composted of Mrs. S. W. Manning, Mrs. Jas. A. Craig, Mrs. Marry Miller and Mrs. Joe Price. *********************************************** OSCAR McCRARY PASSES AWAY The shocking news was wired to Keosauqua about noon Monday of this week from the State Hospital at Mt. Pleasant /that Oscar McCrary was dead. His health has been declining for some years. He was of sterling pioneer stock, born and reared in Van Buren county, his father being Major J. C. McCrary. Oscar was one of the best known and most highly esteemed men of the county, and his heath will be mourned in many homes. He is survived by his wife, who was Miss Rachel Duckworth, and a daughter, Mrs. Carrie Jorgensen, of Aberdeen, Miss. There will be a Masonic funeral at the home here at 2:30 p.m., with Knights Templar escort. Rev. Smith of Birmingham will also conduct short services. Burial at Oak Lawn cemetery.
