Description	:	Ott Merritt (as he was affectionately called by his friends) died suddenly Sunday evening, Feb. 16, 1941, at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Reuben Kirkendall. They had all been eating supper and were visiting together afterwards. Mr. Merritt was talking, when in the middle of a sentence his head dropped forward and death had come quickly and quietly. They had all been eating supper and were visiting together afterwards. Mr. Merritt was talking, when in the middle of a sentence his head dropped forward and death had come quickly and quietly. Oscar Monroe Merritt was born in Iowa Jan. 23, 1866; he was 75 years, 24 days old at the time of his death. Oscar Merritt, a promising young farmer was married to Mary A. Prosser, at the home of the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Isaac W. Prosser in Cherokee county, near Cleghorn, IA on Oct. 13, 1887. The bride and groom settled on their farm nearby, where they farmed until they moved to Paulina, Iowa on a farm. On Oct. 31, 1898 they came to Parker arriving here with five children. They purchased the livery barn of Dick Stout, located just east of the old Parker House, now the Burt Johnson garage. Mr. Merritt continued in this business for a year, when he disposed of his interest in the business and engaged in restaurant, general auctioneering and real estate, which has taken him into five different states, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, and North and South Dakota, calling as high as 120 sakes in a year. Mr. Merritt later combined this with farming. On Oct. 13, 1937 Mr. and Mrs. Merritt celebrated their golden wedding anniversary with all of the children and their children present. Mrs. Merritt died on Jun. 25, 1939 and since that time Mr. Merritt has visited with his children in Minneapolis and around Parker. Col. Merritt was among our most respected citizens and had many friends all over this part of the state. He is survived by his eight children and 22 grandchildren. His children are Mrs. Harry Currier (Maude), Mrs. Harold Merrigan (Lucille), Mrs. Bernice Callery all of Minneapolis, Mrs. Reuben Kirkendall (Sue), Floyd Hamilton Merritt, Wendell Merritt of Parker, Melvin Merritt also Minneapolis and Ike Merritt of Canistota.
