The Ludvigsen Mortuary was in charge of arrangements. Oscar Norse Berkland was born July 23, 1911, in Emmet County, near Ringsted, the son of Olia and Anna (Olsen) Berkland. He attended the No. 2 Independence Country School and Ringsted High School. He Mildred Mae Miller on December 12, 1934, in Cylinder. They farmed in the Ringsted area for several years. In 1937, they sold hte farm and moved to Manchester, where he and his brother, Alfred, operated a Coast-to-Coast store. In 1939, they moved to Wahoo, Nebraska, where they operated a Coast-to-Coast store. Mildred preceded him in death on November 10, 1946. He married Lorna Oldigs on September 21, 1951, in Lincoln, Nebraska. Together they moved to Fremont, Nebraska in 1961, where he was a distributor for the Omaha World-Herald newspaper, until 1967. He was the Ridge Cemetery superintendent from 1967, until retiring in 1980. He was a member of the First Lutheran Church and a former member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Wahoo. Nebraska. Surviviing are his wife, Lorna; two daughters, Karen (Paul) Ruwe of Arlington, NE, and Joan (Brad) Katz of Fremont, NE; three sons, Richard and Lynn Berkland, both of Fremont, NE, and Ronald Berkland of Wahoo, NE; 11 grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; three sisters, Ella Thompson of Cylinder, Mamie Tindeland of Buffalo, MN, and Ruth (Robert) Grethen of Emmetsburg; and seven brothers, Alfred Berkland of Wahoo, NE, Martin Berkland of Ringsted, Irvin Berkland of Cylinder, Reuben Berkland of Fenton, Lloyd Berkland of Port Charlotte, FL, Carl Berkland of Perry and Donald Berkland of Fort Dodge. He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Mildred, two sons, Allan and Galen Berkland, one sister, Esther Mansager and one brother, Arthur Berkland.
