Read More	Oscar T. Bennett, Dies, Well Known Islander One of Little Current's best known citizens and former hardware marchant, Oscar T. Bennett, died at his home here Monday. In failing health for the past three years Mr. Bennett suffered a stroke Saturday. He was in his 75th year. Oscar Theadore Bennett was born in Meaford, Ont., February 17, 1879, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Joshua Bennett. At the age of two years the family moved to Manitoulin Island and settled at Kagawong. His father was a miller. His mother died when he was nine years old, he then lived with his grandmother, later when he was 11 years old he moved to David Munro's. He lived at Mr. Munro's until he was 18, worked on the farm during the summer months and attended school in the winter. Mr. Bennett spent one season in the West. He returned to Manitoulin and worked in lumber camps and lumber mills. He worked several years for the Jackson Lumber Co. in Little Current. When Mr. George Jackson sold the mill Mr. Bennett left to work elsewhere as a company log scaler. On June 23, 1915, he married Eleanor McCauley, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. James McCauley of Bidwell. They settled at Beaverston and lived there three winters. Mr. Bennett spent one winter at Porcupine. He returned to Little Current and in the fall bought the hardware business of the late John Sims. Nine years later, in 1930 he built a new store on the corner of Robinson St. and the Gore Bay Road. This store he operated until three years ago last September when he retired and sold it to J. F. McDermid of Providence Bay. He had been in the hardware business 29 years. He was a member of Little Current United Church, a member of Doric Lodge and a member of Little Current Curling Club. He was also a former member of the Library Board. During the depression he was a member of the Relief Committee. Mr. Bennett realized the need for a high school in Little Current and through his efforts and the efforts of several other citizens the present high school was built. He is survived by his wife. There were no children. Funeral service will be held at Little Current United Church Thursday afternoon, February 18, at 2 p.m. Rev. Stanley Smith will officiate. Doric Lodge of the Masonic order will conduct the graveside service. Interment at Green Cemetery.
