Smith Mother: Katherine Warner Spouse: Matilda Meyer ------------------------- Oscar Verbert Smith, son of Vincent and Katherine Smith, was born in Charles Mix county, South Dakota, Aug. 21, 1892 and passed away June 23, 1946 in the Methodist hospital in Scotts Bluff, Nebr. at the age of 53 years, 10 months and 2 days. He was four years old when the family moved to Iowa in a covered wagon, locating in Silver township, Cherokee county. They made their home in Silver and Rock townships until 1907 when the family moved to Amarillo, Texas. Returning to Iowa year later, he lived in the Quimby community. During World War I, he enlisted for service. After three months training at Camp Dodge, he left for overseas with the 88th division, landing in England Aug. 28, 1918. From there he went to France and immediately to the front lines, where he remained until the end of the war. During that time he was seriously ill of the flu from which he never completely regainted his health. In December 1919, he married Matilda Meyer and they farmed in Willow township. The coupld had one son, Archie Vincent. Failing health caused Mr. Smith to leave the farm five years later, and he took up the barbering profession at Gaza. After several years, he entered the Veterans hospital at Hot Springs, S.D. never completely recovering his strength, but remaining cheerful. The last 12 years he spent as custodian of the Quimby school, endearing himself to students and instructors alike. A year ago he moved to Arcadia, Calif. where he was forced to enter the military hospital at Long Beach for seven weeks this spring. Then Mr and Mrs Smith came back to Scotts Bluff to be with their son, where the death occurred. Surviving are his widow; his son; a brother, W.V. Smith, Quimby; six sisters, Mrs. Etta McCannon and Mrs. Esther Jenness, Quimby, Mrs Dora McCannan, Gresham, Ore, Mrs. Irene Carstenson, Lakefield, Minn., Mrs. Violet Woodall, Marcus, and Mrs. Vivian Specht, Cherokee.
