Funeral services were conducted Wednesday at the Watts Funeral Home in Montezuma, with the Rev. George M. Salnave, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Montezuma, officiating. Mason, 92, of Montezuma, former Poweshiek County auditor, died Sunday, Sept. 29, at Grinnell General Hospital. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday at the Watts Funeral Home in Montezuma, with the Rev. George M. Salnave, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Montezuma, officiating. Burial was in Jackson Township Cemetery, with military rites conducted by Blakely-Stevens American Legion Post. The son of Ellen and Fred Mason, he was born July 14, 1899, in What Cheer. He attended school there and served in the U.S. Navy during World War I. He was married to Ida Mildred Jacobs July 9, 1923. Mr. Mason was appointed deputy county treasurer in 1929 and served until 1945, at which time he was appointed county auditor. He was re-elected to that position until his retirement in 1970. He also served as court bailiff or 12 years following his retirement from the auditor's office. He was a member of the American Legion and past master of Lafayette Lodge No. 52, A.F. and A.M. He had been a second lieutenant in the 113th Cavalry of the Iowa National Guard. He also served on the Poweshiek County Conservation Board for several years and attended the First Presbyterian Church. Surviving are two daughters, Ruth Rabenold of Montezuma and Barbara Heishman of Malcom; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a sister, Zelma Mason of Silver Spring, Md. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, two brothers and two sisters.
