Description	:	Child Smothered to Death in Cotton. Otis, the five year old son of Mr. and Mrs. L. Z. Cox, who live seven miles east of town, was smothered to death in a pile of seed cotton late Saturday afternoon. The distressing circumstances of the death were unusual. The distressing circumstances of the death were unusual. Mr. Cox had been building to his house and had it somewhat in disorder. A pile of seed cotton was in an unfinished room near the kitchen. Mrs. Cox was getting supper when she last saw the little boy. he asked his mother if she were going to "make coffee for grandpa," Mr. H. C. Smith, Mrs. Cox's father, having come in on a visit. Then he went out to play and was not missed till supper was ready. As he did not come to the table with the other members of the family, they began looking for him at once. Some one told his mother that he was lying on the cotton and would not get up. She rand to see and found him with his head in a hole in the cotton. The hole was not very deep and the little fellow's head and shoulders only were in it. He was not dead but the blood had rushed to his head and the face was purple. Beside Mr. Smith and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Moore were present and all of them took the child and worked with it, doing everything possible to restore consciousness, but it soon died. Just why the little fellow was not able to extricate himself from the shallow hole cannot be told. It is thought that perhaps he was asleep when he slipped in the hole and was thus suffocated before becoming fulling conscious.
