Otto Burden, 26 years of age, and until February of this year a lifelong resident of Gunn City and community in this county, committed suicide Friday morning, August 10, 1917, at the family home on a ranch, located some eight miles from Hardin, Big Horn County, Montana. The young man had been despondent for several weeks prior to taking his life, caused by worry over the Selective Draft, and had been called for his physical examination on the day of his death. He used a shotgun to end his life, placing the weapon under his chin. The discharge split the young man's head wide open, and death was instantaneous. The body was shipped to Gunn City for burial, arriving there last Monday morning in charge of E. Bruce Hyatt, the deceased's stepfather, who married the Widow Burden some 18 years ago, since which time Otto had made his home continuously with the Hyatt family in and near Gunn City on the farm still owned by Mr. Hyatt. The stepfather was unaware of Otto's despondency, but learned after his death that he had talked with his mother several times concerning his call for United States Army service. The funeral was held Monday afternoon of this week at 2 o'clock in the Gunn City Christian Church, conducted by the Rev. Daniel F. Yoder, after which burial was made in the Gunn City Cemetery. In addition to his mother, stepfather and several stepbrothers and stepsisters, the deceased is survived by one sister, Mrs. Leslie M. Lucas, wife of a minister of the Christian Church, who resides at Lee's Summit, and two brothers, Frank Burden, living in California, and Arthur Burden; whose present whereabouts are unknown. The Reverend Lucas is pastor of the Christian Churches at both Gunn City and Archie. Mr. Hyatt and family are making preparations to move back to their farm in the Gunn City community, and will re-locate there as soon as they are able to get possession of the property, which is now tenanted by Charles Brann and family.
