Description	:	Otto John Backhaus, 78, formerly of Cannon Ball, took his final ride to be with his Savior on Oct. 25, 2011. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 29, at Redeemer Lutheran Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Ryan Wolfe officiating. Burial will be in Linton Cemetery. Otto was born on the family farmstead in Emmons County on Oct. 10, 1933, to John and Katie (Goehring) Backhaus, the sixth of 10 children. He was educated in rural Emmons County. On Aug. 7, 1955, he married the love of his life, Phyllis Kundert in Linton. Otto farmed with his father in Emmons County until 1961. He began farming in the Cannon Ball area in 1957, and then permanently moved his family across the river in 1961. Otto was a member of the Beaver Valley Horse Club and the Cannonball Rodeo Club. Otto supported his family with many different jobs aside from farming and ranching over his lifetime. He was a trucker, custom combiner and rancher with Angus, Hereford, Simmental, and in later years Gelbveih cattle. He was an avid horseman. Otto taught all of his children and grandchildren how to ride horses. Otto was owner of the Cannonball Pit Stop, and in later years sold used cars under the name of "Otto's Autos." Otto was even a bus driver for the Solen and Cannon Ball school districts. Otto and Phyllis sold the farm in 1998 and moved back across the river to Linton. Otto went back to trucking and drove a potato truck for a while, and then permanently retired. Otto loved hunting, especially with the family and has passed that love onto them. He also liked ice fishing on the Cannonball and Missouri rivers and playing black jack and poker. After retirement, Otto loved to fish, play checkers, watch old western movies and just spend time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Otto was a man of few words, but the words he spoke were very important. He was a big strong man, An Iron Marshmallow. Otto was a Cowboy in the true sense of the word! Grateful to have shared his life are his loving wife of 56 years Phyllis; his sons, Lance (Sharon), Hazen, Leigh (Rachelle), New Salem, and Ladd, Bismarck; his daughter, Lynnette (Arnold) Kraft, Mandan; 13 grandchildren, JD (JoJo) Backhaus and Jeremiah (Jessica) Backhaus, all of Wisconsin, Jade Backhaus (fiance, Michael McDermott), Minnesota, Larin (Laura) Backhaus, South Dakota, Levi (Molly) Backhaus, Lawton (Kelsie) Backhaus and Lexon Backhaus, all of New Salem, Scotty (Leah) Backhaus, Tennessee, Brandon (Nicole) Backhaus and Brett (Jennifer) Backhaus, both of South Dakota, Kayla Backhaus, Texas, and Faune (Trever) Himmelspach and Mitch Kraft, both of Mandan; 11 great-grandchildren; three special adoptive sons/nephews, Timothy (Sherry) and Dane (Eileen) Dickson, California, and Loren Star, Cannon Ball; seven siblings, Lila (Neil) Beitelspacher, Linton, Freda (John) Allensworth, Bismarck, Arlene (Albert) Grenz, Hilmer (Jan) Backhaus, Caroline (Warren) Newton, California, Rosalie (Jim) Garner, Missouri, and John (Linda) Backhaus, Garrison; very special friends, Charles, Elaine and Fred McLaughlin; plus many more friends, nieces and nephews and "adopted" kids who enjoyed time with Otto at the farm. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Katie Backhaus; his sisters, Phyllis Grenz and Lorrene Schiermeister; and adoptive son, Lawrence Conica.
