Old Settler Succumbs to Pneumonia Otto Kruse Dies After Few Days Illness at Home of Son, Age 80 Years This community was greatly saddened last week to learn of the death of Otto Kruse, which occurred at the home of his son, John, in Hayes twp. on last Friday, March 24th. Although Mr. Kruse had been failing health most of the winter his condition had not been serious until the last few days when pneumonia set in and the end came swift and sudden. Just two weeks ago be was able to come to town with his son and make his many friends in this city a visit. Mr. Kruse was well known in this vicinity being one of the earliest settlers in Hayes Twp., where he resided continuously for 53 years and spent the prime of his life at farming at which he was very successful. Mr. Kruse was an industrious farmer and a good neighbor and loving husband, his passing will be missed by all who knew him. During his long residence in Hayes twp. he was never content to retire from the farm, seeking rather to remain where he had spent his best days and until the day of his death made his home with his son. Otto Kruse was born Sept. 6, 1841 in Holstein, Germany, where he grew to manhood and received his education in the schools of that country. In April 1866, he emigrated to America, coming first to Davenport, Iowa, where he was united in marriage with Miss Meta Rumpel, Nov. 14, 1868. Shortly after marriage he came to Crawford County settling in East Boyer twp. from where he moved to Hayes twp., in 1869, where he has resided ever since. Five children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Kruse, four of whom with his aged wife remain on this earth to mourn his loss, namely, Mrs. Wm. Ewoldt, Hayes twp.; Mrs. Wm. Gottsch, West Side twp.; Mrs. Julius Thiedeman, Hayes twp.; and John, also of Hayes twp. Besides these he also leaves one brother in Hamburg, Germany, and nine grandchildren. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the home internment was made in the Hayes Twp. Cemetery. Rev. Thomas of St. John's Ev. church of West Side officiating. Pall bearers were: Edw. J. Ewoldt, Emil H. Ewoldt, Harold Thiedeman, Alfred, Rudolph and Gilmore Gottsch.
