Burnett, for several years a resident of Dumas, one of the Panhandles pioneers and the foremost cotton authority in this section of the state, passed away at his home at Dumas early Tuesday morning following an illness of several weeks. He had been for some time in an Amarillo sanitarium, but had been taken home and no hope for his recovery held for some weeks. Mr. Burnett probably knew more about cotton culture in West Texas and the Panhandle than any living man in this section of the state. While a resident of Hall county he was the leading cotton raiser of the county, and since moving to Dumas had introduced cotton to the farmers of that part of the Panhandle. He, more than anyone else, was responsible for the thousands of acres of the fleecy staple which were planted in virgin territory in the north Panhandle the past season. His "Burnett's Improved Cotton Seed," developed in this county, was famous the country over. Burnett, came to Hall County from Cameron, Texas, in February 1890 and filed on a section of land ten miles south of Memphis. He came in an emigrant car with J. C. Wilson and unloaded his household goods and two mules at Salisbury. These were his sole possessions. My mother and the children did not come for two years and during the time Father batched in a dugout with Will McMicken and Jim Lewis. After clearing the land of mesquites, he planted wheat and sorghum grains. He never ran cattle, as many others did, we did not even have a milch cow for a long time but borrowed one from Bill Goforth. By 1892 the farmers decided they could not raise wheat here, so they met at Memphis to talk over the crop situation. Father had raised cotton before coming west and he said he was going to try it here. Many tried to dissuade him, saying it would not mature here, but he would not be discouraged. He moistened the seed and rolled them in ashes, and Bill Goforth dropped them through a funnel tied on to the Georgia stock Father used to open the furrows. The seed were then covered with a drag. That fall he gathered two bales, but there were no gins in the county so he stored it until the next year. C. S. Boykin bought the lint cotton from Father for 4 1-2 cents a pound. This money was used to buy our first milch cows, two from W. P. Dial. Father then began to improve his cotton seed. In September 1903, while walking over the field he found a stalk with six open boles. On examination the seed were found to be green in color, and there was no other open cotton in the field. These green seed were planted in a separate field and all cotton produced from them for three years was carefully hand picked, and the seed segregated from other seed. When Father built a gin of his own he would clean the saws before ginning this cotton. From this came The Burnett Green Seed, and thousands of dollars worth were sold. It was found to be able to stand a long drought and mature in 90 days. Father did every thing possible to encourage cotton raising. He traveled all over the plains, talking at farmers' meetings and commercial clubs, niamtairiing that cotton could be produced in a high altitude. In 1917 he sold his land in Hall County and bought nine sections in Moore County. He planted and raised the first cotton there and together with Wm. Gerlach built the first gin at Dumas. While Father advocated raising cotton, he believed in diversified farming and practiced it.
