Description	:	Funeral services for Polly Nelson, age 92, of Clear Lake, SD will be at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 11, 2009 at the St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Clear Lake. Rev. Dennis Hansen will officiate. Polly passed away on Sunday, April 5, 2009 in the Deuel County Good Samaritan Center in Clear Lake. Burial will be in the Lakeview Cemetery, Clear Lake. Dennis Hansen will officiate. Polly passed away on Sunday, April 5, 2009 in the Deuel County Good Samaritan Center in Clear Lake. Burial will be in the Lakeview Cemetery, Clear Lake. Pallbearers will be: Phil Svennes, Brad Bjerke, Keith Bjerke, Bob Schiefelbein, Bob Anderson and Ron Prehn. Music will be provided by Lisa Lundberg, Organist. Visitation will be from 3:00 – 6:00 p.m. at the Houseman Funeral Home in Clear Lake on Friday, April 10, 2009 and will resume Saturday, one hour prior to the service at the church. Polly was a life long resident of Deuel County where she was born on October 13, 1916 at home on a farm in Blom Township near Toronto, SD as a fifth child of George and Inga (Bren) Bjerke's twelve children. Polly spent her first eight years of schooling attending the Mikkelson School District in Blom Township. After graduating from Toronto High School, she obtained a degree from College in Mitchell, SD. While attending the college she lived and worked for a family for her room and board doing cooking, cleaning and caring for small children. She moved to Clear Lake in the fall of 1936 as a Secretary in the Deuel County Extension Office. At that time the Extension Office was connected with the farm program called the AAA Office. While single, she and her sister Hazel Prehn, Doris Kreger and Gladys Jesme rented rooms in the home of Ed and Meta Kreger on the south end of Main Street. On September 28th, 1941 she and Millard Nelson were married at the Leganger Lutheran Church in Toronto by Rev. Harold Bestul. A reception following the wedding was held at the farm home of her parents. Millard and Polly established their home and began a farming endeavor on a rented farm west of Clear Lake until 1945. They then purchased their farm 1.5 miles south of Clear Lake where they continued to make their home for 48 years until moving into Clear Lake. Millard passed away in January of 1998. Polly continued to work at the AAA until 1942 when she became an active partner in the farming business. Polly returned to work for the AAA which was then called the Agricultural Stabilizations Conservative Service (ASCS) Office in 1948 and continued to work there until July 1979, when she retired as the County Executive Director of the Deuel County ASCS Office. Upon retirement she worked part time at the Deuel County National Bank. She entered the Deuel County Good Samaritan Center in Clear Lake, August, 2003, where she resided until her death on Sunday, April, 5th 2009 at the age of 92 years, 5 months and 23 days. She was an active member of St. Paul's Lutheran church, where she served as a Sunday school teacher for more than 15 years. She was also a member of the church choir and served as an officer of the ALCW, as well as an officer of the Coteau Conference of the ALCW. With a group of farm wives in the neighborhood, Polly was instrumental in organizing an Extension Club, know as the Happy Hour Club, and she remained as a charter member for many years. Polly is survived by her son Ardell (Marge) Nelson of Milbank, one grandson Chad Nelson of Milbank and one granddaughter Stacey (David)Garcia of Savage, MN; three great-grandchildren: Jesse Nelson, Madison Garcia and Dawson Garcia; five siblings: Kenneth Bjerke, Norma Selix, Edna Llorente, Phyllis Svennes and Richard (Dick) Bjerke and numerous nieces and nephews. Polly was preceded in death by her husband, Millard, her parents, six siblings: Harry Bjerke, Andy Bjerke, Irene Anderson, Clarence Bjerke, Hazel Prehn and Mervin (Bud) Bjerke.
