Depot Thursday when the west bound passenger train pulled into the station. A young man named Palmer Oppegard, who was employed at the N.P. shops as a wiper, was hurrying to the depot. Oppegard was walking along the plank walk between the two tracks and just before he was overtaken by the oncoming train attempted to cross over to the north side of the track in front of the train. He was struck in the back by the engine, thrown into the air and then he fell across the rail. The engineer did not see the man, his position being on the right side of the engine, but the fireman saw the man attempt to cross and shouted to the engineer to stop the train, which was done as soon as possible by the application of the emergency air brake. The stop was not quick enough to save the man as he was struck about the same instant that the air was applied. When the train stopped he was lying alongside of the rear tender truck, on the south side of the track and had been dragged about the length of a car. He was awfully mangled. His right leg was cut off below the knee and was severed from the trunk at the hip. His right hand was cut off at the wrist and only hung by a shred of skin. A large hole was in the back near the right side and there was a large cut over the left eye. When picked up by the railway men he was still alive but breathing heavily. A doctor was summoned at once but he died within a few minutes. The young man was 27 years of age and was formerly a student at the Agricultural college in this city. He was a member of the class which went to Chicago last year to compete in the stock judging contests. He had been working in the N.P. shops since seeding was over last spring. His father, Hans Oppegard, a prosperous farmer living near Dazey, N.D., and a brother, Ole, a merchant at Dazey, arrived in the city last evening. The remains will be taken to Dazey this afternoon and the funeral will be held at Dazey at 1 o'clock Saturday. From the Jamestown Weekly Alert, published Thursday, 28th of August 1902, page 2.
