When 18 years old, in Franklin County, Ind., she was happily converted and joined the United Brethern church. Shortly after her marriage with her now bereaved husband, Dec. 9, 1866, she with him connected herself with the Methodist Episcopal church, remaining a faithful member of the same in the time of her death. She arrived in Butler County and went on the homestead, Sept. 1, 1871. Three children have preceded her to the glory world and five remain to follow on. Her Christian life shows out as one of the most beautiful. Her intensest sufferings never caused a word of complaint. Her absorbing thought was that all might know the "God was good." Patiently waiting the "knock at the door," Listening for footsteps from Heav'n's fair shore Praying for "strength to endure" till they come, Angels in white robes, to bear thy soul home. Another beautiful winter day is past and gone forever. The rose and golden rays of the slowly setting sun have fallen for the last time on the dying eyes of a loving wife and mother. Other mornings shall come to our shores with promising beauty and life-giving cheer, but not for her eyes to look upon; other evenings, followed by trooping shadows, shall bring to Earth's weary children "rest and sweet repose," but the mother, whose suferings are over, has found a sweeter rest, a rest unbroken by care, or thoughts of the absent dear ones; a rest wherein shall come no mere long nights or days to hold her in their "furnace heat of pain." The shadows of evening gather round her vacant chair, as if unseen hands were gently covering it from sight until the agony of grief be past. But what great life-lessons have been taught from that dear chair during these longs months of suffering, lessons of patience, loving thoughtfulness and undying faith, which cheered and buoyed the soul above the storms that wrecked the "earthly dwelling-house of clay," even through darkest hours of pain. Not a cloud of doubt but disappeared before a sweet hope and strong faith. Today her loving voice is hushed in deep, strange silence; the eyes which shone with kindest thought are sealed to mortal sight; the friends who gather round the table in the lonely home will miss their approving glances. The firm white hands, grown thin through suffering, are not striving today in restlessness and pain; neither can they tremblingly point Heavenward, to assure the watchful eyes of dear friends of a "wondrous peace, and hope and faith unchanging. In a "silent city of the dead," lying out upon the prairies, where summer winds shall sing a requiem, where birds shall build their homes with many joyous songs, where a new-made grave shall grow green with summer grasses, and a quiet hush falls over, there the mother sleeps beside her children.
