Her funeral service will be 10 a.m. Saturday, May 21, 2005, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Java, with Pastor Paula Anderson officiating. Burial will follow at St. Paul Lutheran Church Cemetery, Java. Patanna's family prefers memorials in her name to the American Cancer Society, Midwest Division, 2520 Pilot Knob Road, Suite 150, Mendota Heights, MN 55120-1158 or to the Aberdeen Area Humane Society, PO Box 1013, Aberdeen, SD 57401. There will be a public prayer service at Miller Funeral Chapel, Selby, 7 p.m. Friday with visitation beginning at 5 p.m. People may also pay their respects beginning 9 a.m. Saturday at the church. Patanna Caroline Zimmerman, daughter of Gloria M. (Schlepp) and Ernest Zimmerman, was born at Mobridge on May 3, 1955. She was raised and educated in Java, graduating with the JHS Class of 1973. Her junior year, she was selected as Java's Girl's State delegate. In 1977 she received a bachelor of science degree in business education with an English minor from Northern State College in Aberdeen. While at Northern, she played clarinet in the Wolves Marching Band and was a Gypsy Day Queen candidate. Her teaching career took her to Cresbard for one year and Lyman County in Presho for four years. She then moved to Pierre and held a position with the state department of food and nutrition for 1&1/2 years. The next four years, she taught in the Faulkton School District. Patanna then moved to Aberdeen to take data processing courses at Northern and began her career at the Aberdeen American News as a night newsroom clerk. Most recently, she was the assistant news editor. She was a baptized, confirmed, and life member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Java. She was active in the extra curricular activities in the schools she taught at, as well as being active in the communities where she lived. One highlight for Patanna occurred in 1980 when the cheerleaders for the Boy's Basketball State B Champion Lyman Raiders won the coveted Spirit of Six award with Patanna serving as their advisor. She enjoyed scrapbooking, making greeting cards, and will be remembered as a dog lover. Family members surviving Patanna include her mother, Gloria M. Zimmerman of Java; one brother, Brad E. Zimmerman and his wife Carol of Gainesville, Ga.; two nephews, Alec and Evan Zimmerman; and her dog Buffy. She was preceded in death by her dad on Jan. 15, 1986. Honorary bearers will be all of Patanna's co-workers at the Aberdeen American News, past and present as well as the JHS Class of 1973. Casketbearers will be John Papendick, David Didreckson, and Ron Feickert of Aberdeen, Dick Biel of Huron, Todd Biel of Java, and Lyle Dabbert of Sioux Falls.
