Patricia Burke was born Oct. 2, 1919, in Minneapolis, Minn., the daughter of Morgan Patrick Burke and Mabel Van Dusen Burke. When she was two, the family, including a younger sister, moved to Glasgow where she attended school through her first year of high school. The family moved to Havre where she graduated from Havre High School in 1937 and from Northern Montana College in 1939. She then attended the University of Montana at Missoula for one year and part of another, but completed a flying course in Havre in the summer of 1940, receiving her pilot's license in Havre at a time when few women were licensed pilots. She returned to the university for winter quarter, then accepted a job in Miles City as office manager of the Etchart Flying School in Miles City for three years. On June 13, 1942, she and Darrel Fredrick Gudmundson of Miles City were married in Havre. He enlisted in the Air Corps and served two years during World War II. Meanwhile she worked for a few months at Montana State College in Bozeman as ground instructor for Air Corps and Navy students, then followed her husband to Spokane, Wash., and then to Sioux Falls, S.D., where he was stationed with the Air Corps until August of 1944 at which time he was discharged from the service. He returned to Miles City and his former job as sign painter for the Montana Highway Department, a job he held for 38 years. Mrs. Gudmundson had been a correspondent for the Billings Gazette and the Great Falls Tribune since approximately 1946. She began working for the Miles City Star as a reporter in 1956 and retired in September 1981, but continued part-time until 1999 when she finally retired completely at the age of 79 and sold the home she and her husband began building in 1948. They also built and enjoyed a cabin at Rock Creek on Fort Peck Lake for 20 years. She was a longtime member of the Yellowstone Agate Club, and active in the Audubon Society at Miles City. While in Miles City she also belonged to the First Presbyterian Church, Barn Players, Inc., was a Baseball Mother and at various times had been a Brownie leader, Girl Scout Council member and Cub Scout den mother. Mrs. Gudmundson was state president of the Montana Press Women from 1962 to 1965. Over the years she had a number of articles published in various newspapers and magazines, including "Montana Outdoors," "Lapidary Journal" and others. In 1998 she, with co-author Gene Etchart, published a book about their World War II flying school experiences. She moved to Helena July 2, 1999, and had lived since at Hunters Pointe Retirement Home in order to be nearer part of her family. While there she published a monthly newsletter for residents and at age 85 retired again. Surviving are three sons, Gary Gudmundson and wife Sandy of Kalispell, Dr. Gene Gudmundson of White Sulphur Springs and Alan Gudmundson and wife Patti of Sparta, Wis.; a sister, Colleen Van Nortwick of Fremont, Calif.; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Her husband preceded her in death in 1990. At her request, no services were held in Helena. Private burial was held in Miles City at a later date, and burial took place in Custer Co. Cemetery.
