His wife and now son, John Carroll, a miner at Midland and now daughter, wife of Frank Ryan, a merchant of Midland, survive. Patrick Carroll, of Lonaconing, was seriously injured in Kingsland mine, near this place, Tuesday by a fall of slate. Four ribs were crushed into his body. The Journal sincerely hopes he will soon be restored to his wanted usefulness. Frostburg Mining Journal, Frostburg, Maryland January 3, 1891 Page 3, column 4 County News Deaths The accident to Patrick Carroll of Lonaconing noted two weeks ago, resulted in his death on the 23rd. The funeral took place at the Catholic church, Lonaconing, on Christmas day; interment at Barton. The Lonaconing Review gives the following accurate sketch of his life and just tribute to his character: Patrick Carroll was born of humble but honest parentage, near Dundalk, county Louth, Ireland and at the time of his death was 64 years of age. He came to America in 1846 and has resided in and about Lonaconing since 1863. He was elected to the legislature in 1877, his colleagues being J.H. Oder, of the Mining Journal, Wm. H. McKaig, our Congressman elect, and William Bruce. In 1879 Mr. Carroll was again nominated but was defeated. In 1886 he was appointed postmaster at Lonaconing by President Cleveland, but was relieved before his time expired by President Harrison in 1888. In 1889 he was nominated for the third time by his party for the Legislature and was defeated. He was well known throughout the county. He was a generous, kindhearted man, and objects of charity and benevolence always enlisted his sympathy, and those who sought his aid as a counselor will miss him most. He leaves a wife and two children, James and Mrs. Frank Ryan, to mourn his death. The two latter reside at Midland. (Frostburg Mining Journal articles courtesy of Tamara Urbas)
