Read More	Dubuque Sunday Herald, March 18, 1900 FATHER DONLON'S FATHER Died at Elkader Last Week - Register Gives Account of Obsequies. Rev. Father Luke Donlon, of the Cathedral, mourns his father, Patrick Donlon, who died last week near Elkader. The Elkader Register gives an account of the demise and obsequies as follows: At the family residence in Highland township about 1 o'clock Friday afternoon, March 9th, 1900, occurred the death of Patrick Donlon, after a short illness as a result of la grippe, aged 67 years, 2 months and fourteen days. Dr. Donlon was born Dec. 25th, 1832, in the county of Westmeath, Ireland, and at the age of 10 years came to America, landing at Boston. From there he went to Fitchburg and thence to Millbury, Mass., where on June 16th, 1852 he was united in marriage with Miss Mary Collonan. In 1863 they came to Clayton county, settling in Cox Creek township, and after 3 years moved to Highland township, where they have since resided. To the above union seven sons and four daughters were born and all with the wife and mother survive except one daughter, who died in Cox Creek at the age of one year. The surviving children are: Thomas, residing at home; Mallick, a brother of the Dominican order at Minneapolis; Mrs. Ellen Foran, of Worcester, Mass.; John F., of Boardman township; William, at home; Dr. S.E., of Chicago; Mrs. Michael Hoover, of Boardman township; Rev. Father Luke Donlon, of Dubuque; Miss Stasia at home, and Dr. Joseph, at Elkader. The funeral was held Monday morning and was one of the largest held at this place for some time, some 125 teams being in the procession, while St. Joseph's church was crowded to its utmost capacity by those who came to pay their respects to a respected friend and neighbor. At the church the ceremonies commenced with chanting of the office of the dead, after which solemn high mass was celebrated by the following: Celebrant - Rev. J.F. Reilly Deacon - Rev. Thos. Conroy, of the Cathedral at Dubuque Sub-Deacon - Rev. Thos. O'Donnell of McGregor Master of Ceremonies - Rev. Father Hogan, of Monona The following clergy were also in attendance: Fathers Bosche and Walters, of St. Louis; McCabe, of Clermont; Daly, of Volga City, and Mulligan, of West Union. After the service of the mass Rev. Father Reilly spoke in eulogistic terms of the departed, highly commending him as a man of an unblemished character, a man whom he loved, and one who was always charitable and one who, although engrossed in the affairs of the world, yet was a constant Christian, always true to his religious duties and honorable in his dealings with his fellow men. Certainly no words of the writer can add to such testimony of the worth of our departed friend. We can only express our sympathy for those that mourn. Father Bosche, of the Jesuit mission, followed with an impressive sermon on the subject of "Death" after which the honored remains of Patrick Donlon were laid away in St. Joseph's cemetery. May they rest in peace.
