Patrick F. Cunningham, for several years past a resident of Dubuque, and a portion of the time a patient at Mercy Hospital, passed away yesterday afternoon at that institution. Mr. Cunningham had been a prominent figure in the public life of Dubuque county. For many years he was a member of the board of supervisors and it was during his tenure of office the new court house was constructed. Mr. Cunningham was chairman of the building committee and the dominant spirit in the work. He served six years on the board, beginning in 1888. Deceased, who was well along in years, was a resident of Farley the greater portion of his life, acquiring considerable farm property which he operated in connection with a general store. By vocation he was a contractor and the greater portion of the surfacing and laying of steel on the Northwestern road across Iowa and on the Elkhorn, Missouri Valley branch of the same system was his work. In addition he was engaged in similar work in various parts of the country, notably in the southwest. Deceased bore a reputation that was above reproach. He was acknowledged everywhere as the soul of honor. His Early Life. Mr. Cunningham was born in Ireland in the year 1834 and came to this country in 1855 at the age of 21 years. A short time was spent in other parts of the country but he came to Iowa a year or two after his arrival in this country. He was a contractor, doing a great deal of work which is still in existence. He was 77 years old at the time of his death, the death of his wife preceding his only four months. He is survived by seven children, Mrs. Nick Matthews of St. Louis, Mrs. Byron Gregory of Red Oak, Ia., Mrs. Stephen Buscher of Marengo, Ia., Fitz of Marengo, Fred of Mexico, Frank of Oklahoma, and Joe of Kansas City. The time for the funeral has not been set, but the interment will take place at Farley, Ia. ''''''''''''''''' The Telegraph-Herald (Dubuque, Iowa), March 13, 1911, p. 2, col. 1 IOWAN IS MOURNED LATE P. F. CUNNINGHAM WAS PROMINENT IN EARLY LIFE OF THE COUNTY. The funeral of the late P. F. Cunningham who died in this city last Wednesday was held at Farley on Friday morning, to St. Joseph’s church, Rev. Father Slattery officiating at the church and later at the grave. The last services were largely attended. The burial was in the Catholic cemetery at Farley. The pallbearers were Messrs. Daniel Hogan, Thos. Dunn, J. J. Callahan, C. W. Connell, J. C. Kehoe, and J. P. Sanner. Native of Ireland. Mr. Cunningham was born King’s county, Ireland, in 1834, and made his home in his native country until he attained the age of eighteen years. At that time he emigrated to America. He at first went to Johnstown, Pa., where he engaged in railroad work. He remained in Pennsylvania until 1858, when he harkened to the call of the west and, crossing the Mississippi, he came to Dubuque county and located in Farley to continue his work of railroad construction. Farley was still in its primitive days and it was prior to the advent of the railroad. Built St. Joseph’s. When St. Joseph’s church was built it was Mr. Cunningham who superintended its construction, and again when the edifice was remodeled he had charge of the work. His faithfulness to every contract undertaken coupled with his deep devotion to the faith of which he was a splendid example, resulted in the erection of one of the finest edifice in the county, with which the name of P. F. Cunningham will be associated when its walls shall have crumbled into dust. Mr. Cunningham secured the contract for the construction of the oldest stretch of railroad in Iowa, known at that time as the Dubuque, Southwestern railroad. He completed the road and became the first roadmaster on the same, superintending the construction of bridges and buildings. He remained with the company until 1879, when he engaged with the Northwestern company, for whom he contracted and built 1,500 miles of railroad in Illinois, Iowa, Dakota, Nebraska and Wyoming and continued actively with the company until 1889, when he retired and took up his residence on a 240-acre farm adjacent to Farley. Active in Politics. Mr. Cunningham was active in political circles in the county and was always a staunch democrat. He was elected a member of the board of supervisors and at the January session, 1892, he was elected chairman of the board. Religiously he was a member of the Roman Catholic church. Mr. Cunningham continued to reside in Farley until recent years, when the family moved to Dubuque. In 1860 Mr. Cunningham was united in marriage with Clara Andrews, of Jones county, Iowa, to which union four children were born. They are Mrs. Nicholas P. Matthews of St. Louis, Fred L. of Mexico, Frank of Omaha, and Joseph of Kansas City. Fred L. Cunningham, the oldest of the children, latter became associated with his father in railroad construction work during the last years he was in business and in the summer of 1892 became superintendent of all the tracklaying on the world’s fair grounds in Chicago. Resident Remarried. After the death of his first wife, Mr. Cunningham was married to Miss Catherine H. Fitzgerald of Farley. Seven children were born to this union, only three of whom survive. They are Mrs. Bryon Gregory of Red Oak; Mrs. Stephen J. Buscher of Marengo. Mrs. Cunningham died about four months ago. The events that have marked the life of Mr. Cunningham are full of interest. He was well informed in regard to topics of general interest and was able to relate many interesting events in connection with the early settlement of this part of Iowa. Mr. Cunningham was a man of integrity, honorable in his dealings with the fellow men and was an influential and prominent resident of the country.
