Death Certificate **** The Fonda Times, Fonda, Iowa, Thursday, Sept. 18, 1930, Page 1 Aged Palmer Man Killed When Struck By Train A fatal accident took place at Palmer last Thursday when Patrick Russell, aged 82, was fatally injured when struck by a southbound Rock Island train while walking across the tracks in town. The train going north had side-tracked for the southbound train and Russell had gone around the front of the engine and started across the main track just as the southbound train approached the crossing. He was struck by the engine and his body thrown about five feet, fracturing his skull, breaking his left arm and two ribs. He died a half hour later without regaining consciousness. Acting Coroner George A. Helmer held an inquest and the verdict was that Mr. Russell came to his death by accident. Mr. Russell is a pioneer resident of Pocahontas county, having conducted a general merchandise store in Pocahontas before moving to Palmer about seven years ago to make his home with a daughter, Josie, and a son, Frank. Mrs. Russell preceded him in death by a few months. Another son, Will, lives in Olivia, Minn. The funeral services were held in the Catholic church at Palmer Saturday morning at 9:00 o’clock.
