IMMIGRATION: Patrick arrived in New York, NY, in 1848. His first residence in the U.S. was in Stephentown, Rensselaer, New York, where he was living in the 1850 census. In 1850, Patrick left New York for Fort Winnebago in Columbia, Wisconsin, according to a "Missing Friends" ad that his brother Dennis Kirlin placed from Stephentown, NY, in 1852. By 1860, Patrick and his brother Dennis were living in Calhoun township, Harrison County, Iowa, in the home of a John Quinn. BACHELOR: Patrick was a lifelong bachelor. ADOPTED SON: Patrick had an unofficially adopted son, Francis "Frank" Phillip Kirlin (born Dec. 6, 1876, in Denison, Iowa; died July 15, 1958 in Spokane, WA), whom he raised, and who was living with him in Harrison County, Iowa, in the censuses. Susan McDevitt Servoss, Patrick's niece, was Frank's birth mother. Frank's birth father is unknown. FAMILY: Patrick provided a home to various family members over the years. In every census he has at least one sibling and and their family members in his household. He also went back to County Derry, Ireland, on at least two occasions to bring family members to the U.S. Patrick's COUSIN who also settled in Harrison County, Iowa: George Kirlin DEATH: Patrick lived the last year of his life in Grand Junction, Colorado, with his son, Frank. He had moved there for his health. He died in Grand Junction and his body was returned to Iowa for his funeral and burial. OBITUARY (COLORADO) From The Daily Sentinel, Grand Junction, Colorado, Monday, October 6, 1902: "DEATH OF PATRICK KIRLIN" "At about 4 o'clock Saturday afternoon, Patrick Kirlin, the aged father of Frank Kirlin, the well-known Main Street merchant, died at the family home on North Fifth Street. "The deceased was aged 77 years and over, and came here about a year ago from his old home in Missouri Valley, Iowa. For a time he was benefitted in health, but soon commenced failing, death resulting. "The body was prepared for shipment by Undertaker Bannister, and left this city Sunday night in the charge of his son, Frank Kirlin, for the old home in Iowa. "The deceased was a man of considerable wealth, and this will be left entirely to his only relative, his son, Frank Kirlin, of this city." OBITUARY (IOWA) From Harrison County News, Friday, October 10, 1902: "Patrick Kirlin, long a well-known resident of this county died Saturday in Grand Junction, Colorado, where he has been the last year for his health. He was aged 72 years and had been a resident of this country since coming from Ireland at the age of 21, in 1851, most of which time he spent in this county, where he has so many relatives. He was unmarried, and the uncle of several Kirlin brothers of this city. "The body is expected here this evening or in the morning, for interment in Mt. Carmel."
