Special to The American: Huron, Sept 18. - - Walter W O'Brien, formerly of Dawson, Neb, is in jail here charged with the murder of his infant child. The tragedy occurred early Sunday morning at the home of the family in the northwest part of town. During the week O'Brien had assisted at a lunch counter on the fair grounds, and although a user of intoxicants was regarded as a moderate drinker. Saturday afternoon he drank, as he says, a small portion of liquid that he thought to be whisky, and soon became quarrelsome. He was arrested and taken to the city jail, and in the early evening his wife succeeded in securing his liberty. The two went to their rooms on the second floor of a double house and after supper retired for the night, Mr O'Brien seemingly being in the best of humor. According to Mrs O'Brien's story, she was awakened by her husband soon after 2 o'clock, and directed to close all the windows and doors, telling her that he feared something would happen. This done, she called an officer, but Mr O'Brien being quiet, he was not taken into custody, although she urged that he be taken away. Half an hour later he became boisterous and began throwing furniture and other articles about the sleeping room, Mrs O'Brien took their month old baby boy and started down stairs, when he suddenly sprang upon her and tearing the child from her arms beat its brains out by dashing it against the wall, upon the floor and against the furniture, finally throwing it into a corner. He then caught his wife who had gotten down stairs and was calling for help, and attempted to choke her to death. Mrs Barkley, also an occupant of the house, came to her rescue and succeeded in getting O'Brien by the throat and choking him till he loosened his grip upon his wife. At this time Bert Ingalls came up with a rope and succeeded in tieing O'Brien and holding him to till officers arrived and took him to jail, where his now confined, seemingly ignorant of the awfulness of his deed. O'Brien came here two years ago from Dawson, Neb., where a brother and two sisters now reside.
