Sept 14, 1948 - Emmetsburg reporter - Funeral services were held at Assumption Catholic church this morning for Patrick Vaughan, 18, son of Mr. and Mrs. Steve Vaughan, Mallard farmers, who died of a skull fracture when the automobile he was driving overturned twelve miles southeast of Emmetsburg Sunday morning at 3 o'clock. The Very Rer. W.F. Mason officiated. Details of the crash, the fifth fatal accident in Palo Alto county this year, were available Monday. It happened nine miles south and two east of Emmetsburg or two miles north and two east of Mallard, or five miles straight east of Curlew, while Vaughan and two companions, Dennis Schumaker of Mallard and Ralph Mankle of Havelock were returning from a dance. Schumaker and Mankle escaped, as if by a miracle, without a scratch. They were in a car, a 1336 Ford coach, owned by James Frohling, son or Henry Frohling, who had loaned it to them for the evening but did not accompany them. The boys were headed east on the gravel road toward Schumakers home to drop him off for the night. Afterward, Vaughan and Mankle planned to spend the rest of the night at the Joe Flynn farm. The car hit loose gravel according to the investigation and over turned 1 1/2 times on the road. When it came to a halt it was on its top. After emerging from the wreck Schumaker hurried to a nearby farm house while Mankle stayed with Vaughan, who was still in the auto. Neither believed Pat was as seriouly hurt as he was. Dennis arrived at the farm of Joe Lynch and aroused him from sleep. Then they called an Emmetsburg physician from Lynch home, got in Lynch's car and drove to the scene of the accident. Pat was removed from the wreckage and it was known then that he was badly hurt. Lynch drove to the local hospitai with Vaughan. Vaughan was dead when they arrived. Sheriff Miller said Vaughan died of a skull fracture. All the youths had been riding in the front seat of Frohling's car, which was badly smashed up. The left side of the car was caved in and the top pushed out. Patrick Stephan Vaughan was born Jan. 11, 1930 in Palo Alto county, the son of Stephen and Mary Vaughan and had lived all of his life in the county. He was a graduate of Mallard high school with the class of 1948. Beside his parents, he leaves two brothers, Thomas and John and a sister, Mary Ellen. Mr. Vaughan was summoned from the South Dakota harvest fields to attend his son's funeral.
